Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

Measuring the size of cellulose nanomaterials can be challenging, especially in the case of branched and entangled cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The International Organization for Standardization, Technical Committee 6, Task Group 1-Cellulosic Nanomaterial ...

With the increase in massive digitized datasets of cultural artefacts, social and cultural scientists have an unprecedented opportunity for the discovery and expansion of cultural theory. The WikiArt dataset is one such example, with over 250,000 high qual ...

This work focuses on the security of critical infrastructures against time-synchronization attacks (TSA). A TSA can impact any network that relies on the dynamic analysis of data, by altering the time synchronization between its nodes. Such attacked networ ...

Demographic models of human cultural evolution have high explanatory potential but weak empirical support. Here we use a global dataset of rock art sites and climate and genetics-based estimates of ancient population densities to test a new model based on ...

This paper presents a method to determine the optimal location, energy capacity, and power rating of distributed battery energy storage systems at multiple voltage levels to accomplish grid control and reserve provision. We model operational scenarios at a ...

Modern distribution networks prove to be easily prone to power quality issues, and in particular to the presence of harmonic. components in the voltage and current signals, due to the increasing presence of nonlinear loads, distributed generation, and rene ...

This paper investigates the impact of synchrophasor estimation algorithms in Under-Frequency Load-Shedding (UFLS) and Load-Restoration (LR) schemes, relying on frequency and Rate-of-Change-of-Frequency (ROCOF) measurements produced by Phasor Measurement Un ...

In modern power systems, frequency measurements are employed in many monitoring and control applications. In this context, Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) may represent a promising solution in view of a distributed and synchronized measurement infrastructu ...

The increasing use of renewable energy is a deep going trend mainly supported by the sustained annual growth rate of solar photovoltaic, wind power and biogases. The expansion and evolution of the distribution grids is therefore a key issue to ensure a sec ...

Research on bikesharing has largely focused on systems operating in large cities. Based on the Swiss experience, this paper explores the challenges that small cities (

Multicast is proposed as a preferred communication mechanism for many power grid applications. One of the biggest challenges for multicast in smart grid is ensuring source authentication without violating the stringent time requirement. The research commun ...

The optimal power flow (OPF) problem, a fundamental problem in power systems, is generally nonconvex and computationally challenging for networks with an increasing number of smart devices and real-time control requirements. In this paper, we first investi ...

The increasing penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) at the low and medium-voltage levels is determining major changes in the operational procedures of distribution networks (DNs) that are evolving from passive to active power grids. Such evol ...

The calibration of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) consists of comparing Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) time-stamped phasors (synchrophasors) estimated by the PMU under test, against reference synchrophasors generated through a PMU calibrator. The IEEE S ...

IEEE C37.118 is the current standard for synchrophasor measurements in power systems. It defines the measurement method and communication protocols for the entities in a synchrophasor network. The standard offers two different modes for client-server commu ...

The simulation of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) into real-time simulators (RTSs) is typically limited by the complexity of the synchrophasor estimation (SE) algorithm. This is especially true when dealing with distribution network PMUs due to the more de ...

In this paper, procedures to determine compliance of low-frequency pulsed exposures are investigated. Current methods specified by international standards or guidelines (e.g., from the ICNIRP or IEEE) are recognized to be conservative in order to account f ...

Modern society is dependent on reliable electricity for security, health, communication, transportation, finance, computers and nearly all aspects of the contemporary life. Providing reliable electricity is a very complex challenge. It involves real-time m ...
