The reactive liquid infiltration (RLI) technique, applied to-the MgB2 material, has allowed us to obtain either bulk or wire samples of good transport properties. The evaluation of the voltage-current characteristics, V-I-n, for typical samples, measured by transport at temperatures between 4.2 and 30 K, is presented. The behaviour of the n exponent is discussed in terms of a simple model and the differences between bulk and wire samples are outlined. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A hybrid technology for the realization of threedimensional miniaturized power inductors, transformers and RF inductors is presented. This technology consists of combining planar Cu coils on polyimide substrates with high permeability and high resistivity ferrite cores. For miniaturized power inductors and transformers, high permeability (µr ~2000 Mn-Zn ferrite cores are used. These cores operate up to 10 MHz and are obtained by threedimensional micro-patterning of ferrite wafers using the powder-blasting t

For describing the E-J relation of high-Tc superconductors (HTS) in power applications, where the applied current I is generally limited by Ic, the critical state model, a piecewise linear generalization, or a simple power-law of the type E=Ec(J/Jc)^n are most often used. The power-law cannot be used for modelling the E-J relation with I>>I_c due to the unbound exponential increase of the electric field for currents above Ic, while in reality the non-linear HTS resistivity is limited by its normal state val

The finite element method has been employed in order to simulate the behaviour of a HTS cable for transport current applications. The E-J model includes an anisotropic dependence of the critical current density Jc and power index n on the local magnetic field, whose magnitude is non-negligible and determines the effective critical current of the cable. The cable consists of four electrically insulated layers, each of them composed by 20 superconducting tapes, providing a total critical current of about 4 kA

In the frame of the European Fusion Technology Programme, the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK) and the Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasmas (CRPP) are developing a 70 kA current lead for the toroidal field coils of the International Thermonuclear Reactor (ITER-FEAT) using high-temperature superconductors (HTS). As a part of this task, two 5 kA HTS modules made of Bi-2212 bulk material cladded with an Ag/Au sheath have been ordered in the industry. The two HTS tubes were connected in parallel formin

An ac loss experiment on two Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs) is carried out in the SULTAN test facility using both magnetization and calorimetric methods to cover a broad range of frequency, from 0.03 Hz to 6 Hz. Loss curves are measured before and after cyclic loading of the samples. The discussion of the results aims to solve the discrepancy observed between the large loss results in the ITER CSMC coil and the low loss observed in former short sample test. The impact of cyclic load on the loss b

The nonlinear behavior of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) is often modeled by an E-J power law in order to describe their electromagnetic properties. This paper presents AC loss calculations in HTS tapes, performed by means of FEM commercial software using the A-V method. The implemented nonlinear model of the HTS tapes takes into account the B-dependence of the critical current density Jc and the power index n. The expressions for Jc(B) and n(B) are obtained from electrical measurements of a Bi-2223

Pyrochlore free 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1PbTiO(3) thin films were prepared from alkoxide-based solution precursors. Preferential (111) crystallographic orientation was obtained on TiO2/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by spin coating. Dielectric, electrostrictive, and piezoelectric properties of the films were characterized in detail. Films show relaxor-like behavior, but with dielectric permittivity which is low (around 4300 at peak and at 340 Hz with E-ac=1.6x10(6) V/m) compared to bulk ceramics and single cryst

The oxidn. of benzoic acid has been performed on boron doped diamond electrodes supported on silicon substrate. The voltammetric behavior has shown that during the oxidn. of benzoic acid at 2.7V (RHE), a polymeric film is formed on the electrode surface that is oxidized at higher potential values. Bulk electrolysis of benzoic acid in HClO4, under galvanostatic conditions results in an instantaneous current efficiency(ICE) near 100% at low current densities and high benzoic acid concns. Electrolysis at high

Strontium Bismuth Titanate is a very promising material for high temperature piezoelectric applications, its elevated ferroelectric phase transition (530°C), linear piezoelectric properties under low field and relatively low room temperature conductivity (compared to others Bismuth Titanates) make it very attractive for precision sensors. However, under severe conditions (low frequency, high field, high temperature or low oxygen partial pressure) some of those advantages disappear. Piezoelectric response is

This paper describes the fabrication and characterisation of 2-dimensional inductive devices integrated inside printed circuit boards . PCB and flex-foils. These devices basically are composed of three layers of which the outer layers bear the printed coil patterns and the inner layer is a high permeability ferromagnetic sheet core. Both magnetic metal and copper layers are patterned using standard lithographic techniques. Electroplated interconnections between the outer layers complete the windings. We hav

The accessory e.g. lamp for illumination of the hand-held instrument (L) and the excitation coils (B1-B3) of the brushless motor (M) are all supplied with current through a rotary connector (F) from a control circuit (C1) within a fixed part of the machine or power cable. Positive and negative supply lines (L1, L2) from a voltage source (S) feed three pairs of controlled transistor switches (CE1-CE3) whose midpoints (P1-P3) are wired to terminals (b1-b3) of the star-connected coils. The lamp is fed from a s
