In sub-Mediterranean ecosystems, shade-tolerant broadleaf evergreens, especially the invasive Trachycarpus fortunei, are spreading uncontrollably in the forest understorey, impeding the regeneration of the native deciduous woody vegetation. Most invasive s ...

Solid-state photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) is a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy technique in which nuclear spin hyperpolarization is generated upon optical irradiation of an appropriate donor-acceptor system. Unt ...

Dreissena polymorpha is a bivalve promising for biomonitoring in freshwater ecosystems thanks to its abundance and high filtration activity allowing rapid uptake of toxicants and identification of their negative effects. Nonetheless, we still lack knowledg ...

The structural elucidation of metabolite molecules is important in many branches of the life sciences. However, the isomeric and isobaric complexity of metabolites makes their identification extremely challenging, and analytical standards are often require ...

This thesis consists in an extensive study about the enantioselective Pictet-Spengler reaction (EPSR) and its application to the total synthesis of monoterpene indole alkaloids (MIAs). The general introduction presents the literature background about this ...

The development of a titanium(III)-mediated cascade electrocyclisation/rearrangement for the enantioselective total synthesis of indole alkaloids (+)-condyfoline and (-)-tubifoline serve as the basis of the first chapter of this thesis. An introduction wil ...

Endozoicomonas are prevalent, abundant bacterial associates of marine animals, including corals. Their role in holobiont health and functioning, however, remains poorly understood. To identify potential interactions within the coral holobiont, we character ...

Vertical gradients in the canopy represent a major challenge for scaling from foliar photosynthesis to ecosystem-level CO2 fluxes. We tested whether accounting for independent gradients of carboxylation capacity (Vc(max)) and photosynthetic electron transp ...

Background Cyanobacteria and their toxins occur in high concentrations during the so-called bloom events in surface waters. To be able to assess the risks associated with cyanobacterial blooms, we need to understand the persistence and fate processes of th ...

Motivation: Finding biosynthetic pathways is essential for metabolic engineering of organisms to produce chemicals, biodegradation prediction of pollutants and drugs, and for the elucidation of bioproduction pathways of secondary metabolites. A key step in ...

Brain metabolism evolves rapidly during early post‐natal development in the rat. While changes in amino acids, energy metabolites, antioxidants or metabolites involved in phospholipid metabolism have been reported in the early stages, neurometabolic change ...

Living organisms can catalyze many thousands of biochemical reactions that they use to convert energy and matter, which provides them with the essentials for life. The sum of these chemical reactions happening in an organism is called metabo-lism. Understa ...

Photosynthetic water oxidation is catalyzed by the Mn4Ca cluster in photosystem II (PSII). The nearby redox-active tyrosine (Y-Z) serves as a direct electron acceptor of the Mn4Ca cluster and it forms a low-barrier H-bond (LBHB) with a neighboring histidin ...

Some sacoglossan sea slugs incorporate intracellular functional algal chloroplasts, a process termed kleptoplasty. "Stolen" chloroplasts (kleptoplasts) can remain photosynthetically active up to several months, contributing to animal nutrition. Whether thi ...

New drugs are needed to assure effective therapies for previously untreated diseases, emerging diseases, and personalized medicine, but the process of drug development is complex, costly, and time-consuming. This is especially problematic considering that ...

Organic chemistry is essential for the development of a modern society and technical progress requires the continuous development of synthetic methodologies Novel, efficient, selective and flexible protocols are employed to access complex frameworks from s ...

The fragment-based approach is a well-established strategy for organic drug discovery. Recent studies have shown that this approach also has considerable potential in medicinal inorganic chemistry, and yet the approach has not been formally described. Here ...

Predicting responses of plankton to variations in essential nutrients is hampered by limited in situ measurements, a poor understanding of community composition, and the lack of reference gene catalogs for key taxa. Iron is a key driver of plankton dynamic ...

An enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-terengganensine A, a heptacyclic monoterpene indole alkaloid, was performed. A short sequence allowed to obtain the enantio-enriched target in good overall yield. The synthesis featured a key asymmetric transfer h ...

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a powerful tool increasingly used in biomedical research and also in clinical practice. This thesis focused on the improvements of in vivo 31P MRS and 31P magnetization transfer methods at high magnetic field (9.4T ...
