The following discussion is an edited summary of the public debate started during the conference "Growing Networks and Graphs in Statistical Physics, Finance, Biology and Social Systems" held in Rome in September 2003. Drafts documents were circulated electronically among experts in the field and additions and follow-up to the original discussion have been included. Among the scientists participating to the discussion L. A. N. Amaral, A. Barrat, A. L. Barabasi, G. Caldarelli, P. De Los Rios, A. Erzan, B. Kahng, R. Mantegna, J. F. F. Mendes, R. Réseau complexe

En théorie des graphes, un réseau complexe est un réseau possédant une architecture et une topologie complexe et irrégulière. Comme tous les réseaux, ils sont composés de nœuds (ou sommets ou points) représentant des objets, interconnectés par des liens (ou arêtes ou lignes). Ces réseaux sont des représentations abstraites des relations principalement présentes dans la vie réelle dans une grande diversité de systèmes biologiques et technologiques.

Line graph

En théorie des graphes, le line graph L(G) d'un graphe non orienté G, est un graphe qui représente la relation d'adjacence entre les arêtes de G. Le nom line graph vient d'un article de Harary et Norman publié en 1960. La même construction avait cependant déjà été utilisée par Whitney en 1932 et Krausz en 1943. Il est également appelé graphe adjoint. Un des premiers et des plus importants théorèmes sur les line graphs est énoncé par Hassler Whitney en 1932, qui prouve qu'en dehors d'un unique cas exceptionnel, la structure de G peut être entièrement retrouvée à partir de L(G) dans le cas des graphes connexes.
