The electronic structure of metallic Bi2Ir2O7 has been investigated by a combination of soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the vicinity of the oxygen K edge. The O K-edge ...

The exploration of electronically excited states and the study of diverse photochemical and photophysical processes are the main goals of molecular electronic spectroscopy. Exact quantum-mechanical simulation of such experiments is, however, beyond current ...

Molecules with inversion of the singlet and triplet excited-state energies are highly promising for the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To date, azaphenalenes are the only class of molecules where these inversions have been identified ...

The electronic density of states (DOS) quantifies the distribution of the energy levels that can be occupied by electrons in a quasiparticle picture and is central to modern electronic structure theory. It also underpins the computation and interpretation ...

This thesis investigates novel single-molecule luminescence phenomena at their inherent, sub-molecular length scale. The microscopic understanding of luminescence processes will be crucial for the continued improvement of organic optoelectronic and semicon ...

Intersystem crossing (ISC) rates of transition-metal complexes are determined by the complex interplay of a molecule's electronic and structural dynamics. To broaden our understanding of these key factors, we investigate the case of the prototypical d(8)-d ...

The hemocyanin protein binds and transports molecular oxygen via two copper atoms at its core. The singlet state of the Cu2O2 core is thought to be stabilised by a superexchange pathway, but detailed in situ computational analysis is complicated by the mul ...

The mechanism of aggregation-induced emission, which overcomes the common aggregation-caused quenching problem in organic optoelectronics, is revealed by monitoring the real time structural evolution and dynamics of electronic excited state with frequency ...

Delayed fluorescence (DF) is a long-lived luminescence process used in a variety of applications ranging from oxygen sensing in biological tissues to organic Light Emitting Diodes. In common cases, DF results from the deexcitation of the first excited trip ...

Investigating molecular excitations with femtosecond time resolution is of pivotal importance to understand the out-of-equilibrium processes taking place in molecular systems upon light absorption. The photochemistry of solvated species is heavily determin ...

The photophysics of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is intensively studied due to their potential application in light harvesting and optoelectronics. Excited states of SWCNTs form strongly bound electron-hole pairs, excitons, of which only singlet e ...

Unraveling the interplay between electronic- and vibrational degrees of freedom on the earliest time scales of physical, chemical and biological processes is crucial to gaining insight into the mechanisms that govern the world around us, since it is during ...

Reactions with ozone transform organic and inorganic molecules in water treatment systems as well as in atmospheric chemistry, either in the aqueous phase, at gas/particle interfaces, or in the gas phase. Computed thermokinetic data can be used to estimate ...

The photophysical dynamics of 2-aminopurine riboside (2APr) in CHCl3 have been studied following excitation at (pump) = 310 nm by means of femtosecond transient vibrational absorption spectroscopy (TVAS) aided by quantum chemical density functional theory ...

This work uncovers the implications of the estimation of exogenous inactivation rates for E. coli after the initial lag phase, and presents a strategy for the determination of the second-order inactivation rate constants (k2nd) of these bacteria with relev ...

Excited-state dynamics and electronic structures of Al and Ga corrole complexes were studied as a function of the number of beta-pyrrole iodine substituents. Using spectrally broad-band femtosecond-resolved fluorescence upconversion, we determined the kine ...

We present a methodology for computing vibrationally and time-resolved pump-probe spectra, which takes into account all vibrational degrees of freedom and is based on the combination of the thawed Gaussian approximation with on-the-fly ab initio evaluation ...

We report the results of ultrafast transient absorption studies of tetrakis(l-pyrophosphito) diplatinate(II), Pt-2(mu-P(2)O(5)H2)(4) (Pt(pop)) and its perfluoroborated derivative Pt-2(mu-P2O5(BF2)(4) (Pt(pop-BF2)) in water and acetonitrile upon e ...

Due to their very nature, ultrafast phenomena are often accompanied by the occurrence of nonadiabatic effects. From a theoretical perspective, the treatment of nonadiabatic processes makes it necessary to go beyond the (quasi) static picture provided by th ...

In this work, we derive a method to perform trajectory-based nonadiabatic dynamics that is able to describe both nonadiabatic transitions and intersystem crossing events (transitions between states of different spin-multiplicity) at the same level of theor ...
