The auxiliary power supply for medium voltage converters requires high insulation capability between the source and the load. Inductive power transfer technology, with an air gap between the primary and secondary coil, offers such high insulation capabilit ...

The decline of motor ability is a hallmark feature of aging and is accompanied by degeneration of motor synaptic terminals. Consistent with this, Drosophila motor synapses undergo characteristic age -dependent structural fragmentation co -incident with dim ...

The modern world is heavily reliant on electromagnetic devices to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. These devices are fundamental to powering our society, and the growing need for automated production lines and electrified tr ...

Learning to play an instrument at an advanced age may help to counteract or slow down age-related cognitive decline. However, studies investigating the neural underpinnings of these effects are still scarce. One way to investigate the effects of brain plas ...

Interhemispheric interactions demonstrate a crucial role for directing bimanual movement control. In humans, a well-established paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation paradigm enables to assess these interactions by means of interhemispheric inhibi ...

The acquisition and re-acquisition of motor skills is an important aspect of daily life and in the recovery after a stroke. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is a technique that is used to improve motor learning and enhance motor recovery in stroke sur ...

Soft switching in dual-active-bridge (DAB) converters enables their efficient operation at high frequencies, where the reduction in the size of magnetic components could result in ultra-high power densities. Nonetheless, losing soft-switching at high frequ ...

The localization of partial discharge (PD) sources is of importance for the monitoring and maintenance of power transformers. Time difference of arrival (TDoA) based methods are widely adopted in the literature for the localization of PDs. Recently, time r ...

Neurological disorders such as spinal cord injury (SCI) massively reduce independence and quality of life. Most often, the majority of the nervous system is still fully or partially spared, but dysfunctional due to aberrant or absent descending input from ...

In this work, we demonstrate a state-of-the-art high step-up/down dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter designed with GaN transistors, to achieve a high efficiency and large power-density. A quasi-planar matrix transformer with high step-up/down ratio is demo ...

Humans have a distinguishing ability for fine motor control that is subserved by a highly evolved cortico-motor neuronal network. The acquisition of a particular motor skill involves a long series of practice movements, trial and error, adjustment and refi ...

In humans, a severe spinal cord contusion interrupts the vast majority of supraspinal projections to the spinal cord below the lesion. Permanent paralysis results from the chronic failure of these spared projections to engage lumbar circuits producing leg ...

Tourette syndrome is characterized by 'unvoluntary' tics, which are compulsive, yet often temporarily suppressible. The inferior frontal gyms is implicated in motor control, including inhibition of pre-potent actions through influences on downstream subcor ...

Gait and balance deficits are motor disabilities that typically develop late in the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). These deficits are thought to be the result of dysregulated neural activity in the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamic-cortical motor lo ...

Efficient DC-DC power-conversion with wide-span voltage-regulation is crucial to a sustainable and robust power electronics system. Dual-active-bridge (DAB) offers straight-forward regulation and its transformer enables voltage step-up/down required for ma ...

Objective. Tactile afferents in the human hand provide fundamental information about hand-environment interactions, which is used by the brain to adapt the motor output to the physical properties of the object being manipulated. A hand amputation disrupts ...

Mammalian motor control is implemented by a combination of different networks and system, working coherently to plan the movement of the body or a limb and to execute this movement a dynamical environment. While it is believed that complex, voluntary movem ...

The ever increasing penetration of renewable energy systems in the distribution grids will inevitably require profound changes in the grid infrastructure. One emerging direction, the medium voltage dc (MVdc) grids, is the cornerstone of this work. They are ...

Rodent models are decisive for translational research in healthy and pathological conditions of motor function thanks to specific similarities with humans. Here, we present an upgraded version of the M-Platform, a robotic device previously designed to trai ...

The paper presents a method to identify the location of direct lightning strikes to overhead transmission lines and potential subsequent flashover(s). The method is based on the electromagnetic time reversal theory and relies on the use of a single measure ...
