The sensing of left ventricular (LV) activity is fundamental in the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovascular health in high-risk patients after cardiac surgery to achieve better short- and long-term outcome. Conventional approaches rely on noninvasive me ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia; it will affect one in four adults worldwide in their lifetime. AF has serious consequences, including drastically increased risk of stroke. Catheter ablation surgery is an established treatmen ...

Microvascular dysfunction and resulting tissue hypoxia is a major contributor to the pathogenesis and evolution of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Diverse gene and cell therapies have been proposed to preserve the microvasculature or boost angiogenesis in C ...

Objective. The existence of an upper threshold in electrically stimulated retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) is of interest because of its relevance to the development of visual prosthetic devices, which are designed to restore partial sight to blind patients. ...

The Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies are caused by mutation of dystrophin gene and primarily affect skeletal and cardiac muscles. Cardiac involvement in dystrophic GRMD dogs has been demonstrated by electrocardiographic studies with the onset of a ...

Vascular smooth muscle cells exhibit intercellular Ca2+ waves in response to local mechanical or KCl stimulation. Recently, a new type of intercellular Ca2+ wave was observed in vitro in a linear arrangement of smooth muscle cells. The intercellular wave w ...

This paper is concerned with the mathematical analysis of a coupled elliptic–parabolic system modeling the interaction between the propagation of electric potential and subsequent deformation of the cardiac tissue. The problem consists in a reaction–diffus ...

In this paper, we are interested in the spatio-temporal dynamics of the transmembrane potential in paced isotropic and anisotropic cardiac tissues. In particular, we observe a specific precursor of cardiac arrhythmias that is the presence of alternans in t ...

This paper considers numerical simulations of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems in hemodynamics for idealized geometries of healthy cerebral arteries modeled by both nonlinear isotropic and anisotropic material constitutive laws. In particular, it ...

Purpose Respiratory motion correction remains a challenge in coronary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and current techniques, such as navigator gating, suffer from sub-optimal scan efficiency and ease-of-use. To overcome these limitations, an image-based ...

We propose in this paper an Eulerian finite element approximation of a coupled chemical fluid-structure interaction problem arising in the study of mesoscopic cardiac biomechanics. We simulate the active response of a myocardial cell (here considered as an ...

Communication between vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) allows control of their contraction and so regulation of blood flow. The contractile state of SMCs is regulated by cytosolic Ca2+ concentration (Ca2+) which propagates as Ca2+ waves over a sign ...

Communication between vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) allows control of their contraction and so regulation of blood flow. The contractile state of SMCs is controled by cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) which propagates as Ca2+ waves over a signif ...

This study presents an automatic diagnostic method for the discrimination between persistent and long-standing atrial fibrillation (AF) based on the surface electrocardiogram (ECG). Standard 12-lead ECG recordings were acquired in 53 patients with either p ...

Kinetics of Atrial Repolarization Alternans. Introduction: Repolarization alternans (Re-ALT), a beat-to-beat alternation in action potential repolarization, promotes dispersion of repolarization, wavebreaks, and reentry. Recently, Re-ALT has been shown to ...

Interdisciplinary collaboration between physicians and engineers is now widespread in fundamental and clinical studies, due to the increasing complexity of the physiological problems tackled, and the development of novel measurement devices and data analys ...

Transmitter release at synapses is driven by elevated intracellular Ca2+ concentration (Ca2+) near the sites of vesicle fusion. Ca2+ signals of profoundly different amplitude and kinetics drive the phasic release component during a presynaptic ac ...

We present a model for mechanical activation of the cardiac tissue depending on the evolution of the transmembrane electrical potential and certain gating/ionic variables that are available in most of electrophysiological descriptions of the cardiac membra ...

Smooth muscle contraction is regulated by changes in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration (Ca2+). In response to stimulation, Ca2+ increase in a single cell can propagate to neighbouring cells through gap junctions, as intercellular Ca2+ waves. To investigate ...

Purpose: The timing of bipolar intracardiac electrograms (EGMs) during atrial fibrillation (AF) reflects the dynamics of AF wavelets. The extent of synchronization between EGMs is an indirect measure of AF spatial organization. Our study intends to determi ...
