Real-world power distribution data are often inaccessible due to privacy and security concerns, highlighting the need for tools for generating realistic synthetic networks. Existing methods typically overlook critical reliability metrics such as the Customer Average Interruption Frequency Index (CAIFI) and the Customer Average Interruption Duration Index (CAIDI). Moreover, these methods often neglect phase consistency during the design stage, necessitating the use of a separate phase assignment algorithm. T

Linear and nonlinear local gyrokinetic simulations of the high power high current JT-60SA scenario are presented, based on inputs from predictive transport modelling. Carbon impurities and fast ions are included in the simulations as well as electromagnetic effects. High frequency modes associated with fast ions are found in linear and nonlinear simulations and identified as Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs). In the absence of TAEs, turbulent transport is found to mainly be driven by the ion temperature gra

With the continued expansion of renewable energy production, the size and density of wind farms have increased by more than 50 percent since the 2000s. This growth poses challenges for reliably detecting and locating lightning strikes within wind parks. Conventional lightning location systems may lack the spatial accuracy required to uniquely identify the struck turbine, and further miss some discharges altogether when return-stroke components are absent or too weak to be detected. At the same time, approac

Three-dimensional (3D) rhombic zero-depth pores present a promising solution to the challenges associated with the requirement for ultrathin membranes in DNA sequencing. This study provides a comprehensive numerical analysis of 3D rhombic zero-depth pores formed at the intersection of triangular microchannels using finite element modeling. The model was validated with a mean absolute error of 2.75% between numerical and experimental results. We identified a critical channel length, beyond which pore conduct

Metal-to-metal contact resistance is a key limitation in microfabricated devices, especially when structures are operated at high frequency or integrated in resonant systems where resistive losses directly affect performance. In this project, two-layered thin-film structures were fabricated and electrically characterized in order to investigate the influence of different metal stacks, oxide removal, and geometry on the overall electrical response. Three Metal 1 stacks were studied: Al + W, Cr + W, and Ti +

Lightning localization is crucial for a wide range of applications. Conventional lightning localization methods typically use at least four antennas as sensors for detecting lightning electromagnetic radiation. One of the complications of these methods is the need for sensor synchronization. Most papers on lightning localization highlight the issues of complexity and synchronization requirements. In this paper, we propose a fast learning model using the XGBoost algorithm for lightning localization. This met

We study the behaviour of electromagnetic waves in terms of their propagation through time and space. First, while time typically flows in only one direction for complex systems, the reciprocal nature of most wave systems allows for a form of time reversal. Indeed, for a wave f(t, r), its time-reversed counterpart f(-t, r) can also physically exist. Moreover, methods have been developed to create this time-reversed wave, enabling the application of time reversal to wave focusing and imaging. In this contex

Frequency metrology lies at the heart of precision measurement. Optical frequency combs provide a coherent link uniting the microwave and optical domains in the electromagnetic spectrum, with profound implications in timekeeping, sensing and spectroscopy, fundamental physics tests, exoplanet searches, and light detection and ranging. Here, we extend this frequency link to free electrons by coherent modulation of the electron phase by a continuous-wave laser locked to a fully stabilized optical frequency com

The utilization of subwavelength resonators, such as small electric dipoles, plasmonic resonators, or objects made of materials with a high dielectric constant, has enabled the manipulation of electromagnetic fields down to the subwavelength regime with synthetic electromagnetic materials built from dense arrangements of such resonant inclusions [1]. Guiding [2] and focusing [3] of electromagnetic energy at the deep subwavelength scale has been demonstrated for electromagnetic waves in metamaterials, by exp

This paper provides some clarification on the subject of the response of multiconductor lines to lightning-originated electromagnetic fields. Specifically, the effect of the presence of more conductors on the line response is analyzed with and without taking into account the ground losses in the surge propagation. The effect of the boundary conditions is also discussed. The presented analysis shows, in particular, that the response of a matched multiconductor lossless line differs from that of a single-cond

After completing the qualification tests of the ITER cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC), the tests of samples from the series manufacture are running in the SULTAN test facility in Villigen, Switzerland. The key test for the conductor samples is the current sharing temperature, Tcs, at the nominal operating field and current, i.e. the maximum temperature at which the conductors operate before developing an electric field of 10 μV/m. All the TF samples fulfilled the ITER requirement of Tcs ≥ 5.8 K after 1000

Multiferroics are materials in which ferroelectric and magnetic e.g., ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic orders co-exist. Some of these show the magnetoelectric effect which is the coupling between electric and magnetic degrees of freedom leading to induction of electric polarization by an applied magnetic field and also induction of magnetic polarization by an applied electric field. Multiferroic substances have attracted attention in recent times as they are expected to show relatively larger magnetoelect

The mechanical action on iron of the first horseshoe electro-magnets (1824) was obvious. They quickly found important applications (telegraphy). Their use to investigate more subtle magnetic, magneto-optical, atomic or nuclear properties of matter began in 1845 with Faraday. Until the 1970s, when superconducting magnets became common, iron-cored electromagnets were normally used to produce steady magnetic fields of high intensity. We will follow the history of a series of fundamental physics discoveries, of

A germanium (Ge) strip waveguide on a silicon (Si) substrate is integrated with a microfluidic chip to detect cocaine in tetrachloroethylene (PCE) solutions. In the evanescent field of the waveguide, cocaine absorbs the light near 5.8 mm, which is emitted from a quantum cascade laser. This device is ideal for (bio-)chemical sensing applications.

This article introduces the design of surface coils for multinuclear applications. The relative sensitivities of several NMR-visible nuclei of biological interest are considered, and the motivations to operate an RF coil at multiple frequencies, both sequentially and simultaneously, are reviewed. The design of nested surface coils is then developed. Magnetic fields generated by planar loop and butterfly coils are first introduced. The benefits of quadrature design are briefly considered, and methods for com

Synchronous motors require sensors in order to control these devices in speed and/or position. Basically, the auto-commutation needs 3 sensors for a 3-phase type actuator. In micro-motors, as there is no more room to place the sensors, self-sensing approach must be used. The motor becomes a sensor it-self and electromagnetic phenomena are analyzed to detect the position of the rotor. These phenomena are magnetic saturation, back-EMF detection, Eddy current analysis and/or magnetic anisotropy variation. The

In this paper, we consider the minimization of a relevant energy consumption related cost function in the context of sensor networks where correlated sources are generated at various sets of source nodes and have to be transmitted to some set of sink nodes. The cost function we consider is given by the product [rate] × [link weight]. The minimization is achieved by jointly optimizing the transmission structure, which we show consists of a superposition of trees from each of the source nodes to its correspon

The aim of this paper is to report on recent advances made in global gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes and other microinstabilities. The nonlinear development and saturation of ITG modes and the role of E x B zonal flows are studied with a global nonlinear deltaf formulation that retains parallel nonlinearity and thus allows for a check of the energy conservation property as a means of verifying the quality of the numerical simulation. Due to an optimized loading technique, the

The manufacturing method for components of the inductive type, in particular inductance coils, transformers or antennae, consists in making by micro-machining simultaneously on a first substrate made of magnetic material a plurality of first parts (1) connected to each other by connecting elements (2) or a connecting support, inserting on the arms (8a, 8b, 8c) of these first parts (1) a printed multi-layered plate (4, 5) having openings for the arms and metal windings ending in at least two contact pads (7a

In the last twenty years, the widespread use of sensitive electronic devices has increased the interest in transients, in particular those caused by lightning (direct and/or indirect). This paper presents the latest developments in modeling the electromagnetic (indirect) effects of lightning. The progress in field-to-transmission-line coupling calculations for networks permits the analysis of more complicated structures subject to a lightning electromagnetic field. In parallel, it has been observed that the
