Bending-active elastica beam is a structural configuration that is based on the elastic deformation of an initially straight beam. This deformation occurs when horizontal displacements are applied to a sliding support, causing the beam to bend into an arch ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

Abstract The degradation of metal interconnects (ICs) in Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs) primarily results from chromium (Cr) oxide scale growth on stainless-steel substrates, causing ohmic loss and air-side electrode poisoning by Cr. This thesis addresses these ...

Application of a single metal or alloy is often restricted by its properties from optimal combination of performance and cost. Therefore, there is a vast need of joining dissimilar metals for various applications in biomedical, aerospace, automobile and ma ...

Owing to their high specific stiffness and strength, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composites (CFRP) are ideal candidates for the development of lightweight high-performance structures. Within this family, thin-ply composites allow for wider design freedom and p ...

Strain is an inevitable phenomenon in two-dimensional (2D) material, regardless of whether the film is suspended or supported. Moreover, strain is known to alter the physical and chemical properties, such as the band gap, charge carrier effective masses, d ...

Coating nano particles and other substrates for efficiency enhancement, protection and obtaining new atomic structures is a widespread research topic in catalysis and material synthesis. Thus far, different approaches of coating, ranging from simplest to s ...

This work extends the range of pathways for the production of metallic microcomponents by downscaling metal casting. This is accomplished by using either of two different molding techniques, namely femtosecond laser micromachining or lithographic silicon m ...

We address the effect of elastic inhomogeneity on elastic modulus and hardness determinations made by depth-sensing indentations performed on individual particles embedded within a matrix of different elastic modulus. Finite element simulations and nanoind ...

A quantitative analysis of stress in indium tin oxide (ITO) films with varying thicknesses was conducted using high-precision stylus profilometry. The experimental results revealed a transition of the stress type from tensile to compressive as the ITO film ...

In the last twenty years, a number of studies have been dedicated to the development of thin ceramic coating for the electrical insulation of Ag-sheathed Bi-2212 wires. Instead of preparing a coating by mixing different compounds in house, this technical n ...

Wire-arc directed energy deposition (wire-arc DED), recognized for its ability to produce large-scale parts, has gained considerable attention. However, a critical issue with this method is the high prevalence of internal porosity defects found in the manu ...

Two severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques of simple shear extrusion (SSE) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were employed to process an extruded Mg -6Gd -3Y -1.5Ag (wt%) alloy at 553 K for 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes. The microstructural evolutions ...

The strength of the interface between iron (Fe) and individual spherical silica (SiO2) inclusions of 5 +/- 1 mu m diameter is measured by means of in-situ micro-cantilever bending tests conducted under displacement control within a scanning electron micros ...

SPIDER is the 100 keV full-size Negative Ion Source prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector, operating at Consorzio RFX in Padova, Italy. The largest Negative Ion Source in the world, SPIDER generates an RF driven plasma from which Deuterium or Hydroge ...

Thin-ply composites, obtained with recently developed fiber spreading techniques, rapidly gained industrial interest because they offer a large composite design freedom, and lead to a composite tensile strength that is close to that of the individual fiber ...

In strained mechanical resonators, the concurrence of tensile stress and geometric nonlinearity dramatically reduces dissipation. This phenomenon, called dissipation dilution, is employed in mirror suspensions of gravitational-wave interferometers and at t ...

Laboratory three-point bending experiments are carried out to evaluate the effect of various fluids on the tensile strength of granite. The granite specimens were tested under both dry and saturated conditions. The fluids used to saturate the granite inclu ...

As acknowledged explicitly or implicitly in most of current design codes, a high level of sustained loading has a detrimental effect on the concrete compressive strength. However, its beneficial effect in terms of deformation capacity is neglected in most ...

Graphene and graphene oxide (GO)-based coatings are of great interest due to their mechanical, electrical and/or thermal performance that add functionalities to materials employed in many industrial and biomedical appli-cations. Hybrid diamond-like carbon ...
