Macrocycles provide an attractive modality for drug development but the identification of ligands to targets of interest is hindered by the lack of large macrocyclic compound libraries for high-throughput screening. A strategy to efficiently synthesize lar ...

The alkyne motif is a versatile functional group often encountered in organic chemistry. It can be involved in various transformations such as the alkyne-azide cycloaddition and has found widespread application in medicinal chemistry, chemical biology and ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of materials that offer great promise in various applications. However, the synthesis remains challenging: for example, a range of crystal structures can often be accessed from the same building b ...

The head-to-tail dimerization of N-heterocyclic diazoolefins is described. The products of these formal (3+3) cycloaddition reactions are strongly reducing quinoidal tetrazines. Oxidation of the tetrazines occurs in a stepwise fashion, and we were able to ...

Carbon nanostructures formed through physical synthesis come in a variety of sizes and shapes. With the end goal of rationalizing synthetic pathways of carbon nanostructures as a function of tunable parameters in the synthesis, we investigate how the initi ...

Lignin hydrogenolysis is a key step in the sustainable production of renewable bio-based chemicals and fuels. Heterogeneous metal catalysts have led to high yields but they rapidly deactivate, notably due to nanoparticle sintering and carbonaceous deposit ...

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are responsible for regulating many biological processes in human bodies. PPIs often have a large binding site and often interact through an alpha helical segment. Therefore, the inhibition of PPIs can be difficult using ...

We study elastic ribbons subject to large, tensile pre-stress confined to a central region within the cross-section. These ribbons can buckle spontaneously to form helical shapes, featuring regions of alternating chirality (phases) that are separated by so ...

Aminoacids and peptides generally exhibit zwitterionic forms withsalt bridge (SB) structures in solution but charge-solvated (CS) motifsin the gas phase. Here, we report a study of non-covalent complexesof the protonated amino acid arginine, ArgH(+)(H2O)( ...

The first chapter of this thesis describe the development of a general synthesis of ynimines, an under-exploited motif in organic chemistry. In the presence of an inexpensive copper catalyst and 2,2'-biquinoline, reaction of easily accessible O-acyloximes ...

The geometry of biomolecules isolated in the gas phaseusuallydiffers substantially from their native structures in aqueous solution, which are the only ones truly relevant to life science. To connectthe high resolution of cold ion spectroscopy that can be a ...

We examine the role of charge, structural, and spin degrees of freedom in the previously poorly understood phase transition in the 5d1 transition-metal double perovskite Cs2TaCl6 using a combination of computational and experimental techniques. Our heat ca ...

The biological reduction of soluble U(VI) complexes to form immobile U(IV) species has been proposed to remediate contaminated sites. It is well established that multiheme c-type cytochromes (MHCs) are key mediators of electron transfer to aqueous phase U( ...

We present first-principles calculations of the dynamic susceptibility in strained and doped ferromagnetic MnBi using time-dependent density functional theory. In spite of being a metal, MnBi exhibits signatures of strong correlation and a proper descripti ...

Using the corner-transfer matrix renormalization group to contract the tensor network that describes its partition function, we investigate the nature of the phase transitions of the hard-square model, one of the exactly solved models of statistical physic ...

We highlight with first-principles molecular dynamics the persistence of intrinsic < 111 > Ti off-centerings for BaTiO3 in its cubic paraelectric phase. Intriguingly, these are inconsistent with the Pm (3) over barm space group often used to atomistically ...

A new model for the case of a superposition of a phase transformation and a microstructure transition from columnar plane front to equiaxed dendritic growth for peritectic alloys is presented. This model is applied to Fe-Ni alloys where a phase transition ...

In this thesis, we study systems of active particles interacting via generic torques of different nature. We analyze the phase behavior of these systems, which results from the interplay between self-propulsion, excluded-volume and torques. We tackle the p ...

Non-covalent bonding patterns are commonly harvested as a design principle in the field of catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, and functional materials to name a few. Yet, their computational description generally neglects finite temperature and environme ...

Magnetic skyrmions are nanometric and non-trivial spin textures with non-zero topological charge. Their robustness against perturbations and the possibility to control them using external stimuli make them ideal candidates for future spintronic application ...
