We introduce a Lamb-wave medium with tunable propagation velocities, which are controlled by a two-dimensional heating pattern produced by a laser beam. We utilized it to demonstrate that waves in an appropriately designed medium can propagate in the form ...

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is capable of nanoscale imaging but has so far only been used on cell surfaces when applied to a living cell. Here, we describe a step-by-step protocol for nanoendoscopy-AFM, which enables the imaging of nanoscale structures i ...

There are various possibilities to realize coil winding designs for an inductive power transfer system. In order to achieve high power transfer efficiency and power density and explore trade-offs between the two, design optimization around the coil link is ...

We introduce a reconfigurable medium for the manipulation of elastic propagation properties of Lamb waves. It is based on a shape memory polymer (SMP) with temperature-dependent Young's modulus. Waves are excited by a laser pulse and detected by a laser vi ...

Fast camera imaging is used to study ion acoustic waves propagating azimuthally in a magnetized plasma column. The high-speed image sequences are analyzed using proper orthogonal decomposition and 2D Fourier transform, allowing to evaluate the assets and d ...

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are responsible for regulating many biological processes in human bodies. PPIs often have a large binding site and often interact through an alpha helical segment. Therefore, the inhibition of PPIs can be difficult using ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have unique optoelectronic properties that make them suitable for applications ranging from phototherapy to imaging and sensing, but their uptake has mainly been explored in eukaryotic cells. Here the authors explore ...

Chromatin is spatially organized into functional states that are defined by both the presence of specific histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) and a defined set of chromatin-associated “reader” proteins. Different models for the underlying mecha ...

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the only technique that allows label-free imaging of nanoscale biomolecular dynamics, playing a crucial role in solving biological questions that cannot be addressed by other major bioimaging tools (fluorescence or electron ...

In environmental acoustics and in room acoustics, many surfaces exhibit extended-reaction (ER) behavior, i.e., their surface impedance varies with the angle of the incident sound wave. This paper presents a phenomenological method for modeling such angle d ...

Computer generated optical volume elements have been investigated for information storage, spectral filtering, and imaging applications. Advancements in additive manufacturing (3D printing) allow the fabrication of multilayered diffractive volume elements ...

Microstructures can be carefully designed to reveal the quantum phase of the wave-like nature of electrons in a metal. Here, we report phase-coherent oscillations of out-of-plane magnetoresistance in the layered delafossites PdCoO2 and PtCoO2. The oscillat ...

We propose a theoretical study on the electromagnetic forces resulting from the superposition of TE and TM plane waves interacting with a sphere. Specifically, we first show that, under such an illumination condition, the sphere is subjected to a force tra ...

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay B+ -> pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) , in which CP-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) ...

In this article, we investigate the possibility to model a metasurface, defined as a zero-thickness sheet of surface polarization currents and described by generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTCs), by a thin slab with a subwavelength thickness and u ...

Recently, investigation of metasurfaces has been extended to wave control through exploiting nonlinearity. Among all of the ways to achieve tunable metasurfaces with multiplexed performances, nonlinearity is one of the promising choices. Although several p ...

Simultaneous measurements of current and multiple‐station electric fields associated with a 5.4‐kA‐peak M‐component in rocket‐triggered lightning are presented in this study. A close‐range electric field measurement site was located northeast of the trigge ...

Lignin is a phenylpropanoid polymer produced in the secondary cell walls of vascular plants. Although most eudicot and gymnosperm species generate lignins solely via polymerization of p-hydroxycinnamyl alcohols (monolignols), grasses additionally use a fla ...

Building on the growing evidence based on NMR, magnetization, neutron scattering, electron spin resonance, and specific heat that, under pressure, SrCu2(BO3)(2) has an intermediate phase between the dimer and the Neel phase, we study the competition betwee ...

Collective behavior in spatially structured groups, or biofilms, is the norm among microbes in their natural environments. Though biofilm formation has been studied for decades, tracing the mechanistic and ecological links between individual cell morpholog ...
