Buildings account for 35% of the global final energy demand. Efficiency improvements and advanced control strategies have a significant impact in the reduction of energy costs and CO2 emissions. Building energy simulation is widely used to help planners, c ...

Runaway electrons are generated in a magnetized plasma when the parallel electric field exceeds a critical value. For such electrons with energies typically reaching tens of MeV, the Abrahamâ Lorentzâ Dirac (ALD) radiation force, in reaction to the synch ...

Large scale power production benefits from the high efficiency of gas-steam combined cycles. In the lower power range, fuel cells are a good candidate to combine with gas turbines. Such systems can achieve efficiencies exceeding 60%. High temperature Solid ...

A new falling film heat transfer test facility has been built for the measurement of local heat transfer coefficients on a vertical array of horizontal tubes, including flow visualization capabilities, for use with refrigerants. Presently, the facility has ...

Hydropower represented in 1999 19% of the world electricity production and the absolute production is expected to grow considerably during the next 30 years. Francis turbines play a major role in the hydroelectric production due to their extended range of ...

Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology has attracted remarkable attention in fabrication of sensors and micro-fluidic devices in the last decade. Although structuring planar LTCC foils, which are processed and screen-printed with thick-films, s ...

The purpose of this literature review is to compare different cooling technologies currently in development in research laboratories that are competing to solve the challenge of cooling the next generation of high heat flux computer chips. Today, most deve ...

Current and future dynamics, of environmental legislations and trading market, of the fuel and electricity prices due to the market liberalization or resource shortages, and of the innovations of power/cogeneration technologies, impose great challenges on ...

Extending the idea of exergy to practitioners and policy makers is still a major challenge. Recently the "Canton of Geneva" in Switzerland introduced a new law governing the procedures of attribution of building permits for new or retrofitted city areas. A ...

An increasing recourse to renewable energies is one of the key solutions to address the current resource and environmental concerns related to the world energy supply. Because of the distributed and intermittent nature of several of them (Solar, Wind), an ...

Decentralized energy systems are thought to have great potential for supplying electricity, cooling, and heating to buildings. A decentralized system combining a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with an absorption chiller- heater (ACH) is proposed. The CO2-emi ...

This thesis deals with the combined utilisation of a reaction calorimeter, the RC1® commercialised by Mettler Toledo and equipped with a 2 L glass reactor, and the heat transfer dynamics modelling of industrial reactors. By doing so, the temperature evolut ...

The Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) has been involved in research and technological development of solar energy for building applications since the middle of the seventies. Focusing first ...

The problem of energy optimization in multi-core systems (such as single-chip multiprocessors) where the individual energy demands of various processing elements are governed by instantaneous workload requirements is well defined in literature. The signifi ...

Within the European research project HOPE, 97 apartment buildings and 67 office buildings - a large part of which designed to be energy-efficient - were investigated using checklists regarding building characteristics and guestionnaires addressed to the oc ...

In addition to the high-capacity storage facilities based on hydropower technologies, electrochemical solutions are today’s candidate for storage for renewable energy sources support. However, sustainability and limited life cycles of batteries are often i ...

In the context of energy storage with supercapacitors, the so called round trip efficiency is an important factor that can be strongly affected by the characteristics or performances of the used converter. This paper presents a dedicated DC-DC converter, w ...

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires EU member states to establish a methodology for calculating the energy performance of buildings within a framework that includes the effect of active and passive solar systems as well as other c ...

In order to comply with sustainable development policy, the minimum that buildings should achieve are a healthy, comfortable and energy-efficient environment. Criteria for individually assessing each of the many criteria are known: the occupant's perceived ...
