Type inference in the presence of first-class or "impredicative" second-order polymorphism a la System F has been an active research area for several decades, with original works dating back to the end of the 80s. Yet, until now many basic problems remain ...

Data races have long been a notorious problem in concurrent programming. They are subtle to detect, and lead to non-deterministic behaviours. There has been a lot of interest in type systems that statically guarantee data race freedom. Significant progress ...

Analytical workloads are evolving as the number of users surges and applications that submit queries in batches become popular. However, traditional analytical databases that optimize-then-execute each query individually struggle to provide timely response ...

Cloud function (CF) services, such as AWS Lambda, have been applied as the new computing infrastructure in implementing analytical query engines. For bursty and sparse workloads, CF-based query engine is more elastic than the traditional query engines runn ...

We present Sudokube, a novel system that supports interactive speed querying on high-dimensional data using partially materialized data cubes. Given a storage budget, it judiciously chooses what projections to precompute and materialize during cube constru ...

Modern analytical engines rely on Approximate Query Processing (AQP) to provide faster response times than the hardware allows for exact query answering. However, existing AQP methods impose steep performance penalties as workload unpredictability increase ...

A metaprogrammer should be able to reason about the semantics of the generated code. Multi-stage programming introduced an elegant and powerful solution to this problem. It follows a semantically driven approach to code generation, where semantics are full ...

Formal verification of real-world software systems remains challenging for a number of reasons, including lack of automation, friction in specifying properties, and limited support for the diverse programming paradigms used in industry. In this thesis we m ...

Digital data is a gold mine for modern journalism. However, datasets which interest journalists are extremely heterogeneous, ranging from highly structured (relational databases), semi-structured (JSON, XML, HTML), graphs (e.g., RDF), and text. Journalists ...

Analytics on modern data analytic and data warehouse systems often need to run large complex queries on increasingly complex database schemas. A lot of progress has been made on executing such complex queries using techniques like scale out query processin ...

Modern data analytical workloads often need to run queries over a large number of tables. An optimal query plan for such queries is crucial for being able to run these queries within acceptable time bounds. However, with queries involving many tables, find ...

High-level synthesis (HLS) tools typically generate statically scheduled datapaths. Static scheduling implies that the resulting circuits have a hard time exploiting parallelism in code with potential memory dependences, with control dependences, or where ...

As the data volume grows, reducing the query execution times remains an elusive goal. While approximate query processing (AQP) techniques present a principled method to trade off accuracy for faster queries in analytics, the sample creation is often consid ...

The heterogeneity of today's Web sources requires information retrieval (IR) systems to handle multi-modal queries. Such queries define a user's information needs by different data modalities, such as keywords, hashtags, user profiles, and other media. Rec ...

Visual working memory (VWM) is prone to interference from stored items competing for its limited capacity. Distinctiveness or similarity of the items is acknowledged to affect this competition, such that poor item distinctiveness causes a failure to discri ...

Formally verifying the correctness of software network functions (NFs) is necessary for network reliability, yet existing techniques require full source code and mandate the use of specific data structures. We describe an automated technique to verify NF b ...

Grading student SQL queries manually is a tedious and error-prone process. Earlier work on testing correctness of student SQL queries, such as the XData system, can be used to test the correctness of a student query. However, in case a student query is fou ...

Programming has changed; programming languages have not. Modern software embraced reusable software components, i.e., public libraries, and runs in the cloud, on machines that co-locate applications from various origins. This new programming paradigm leads ...

The growing demand for data-intensive decision support and the migration to multi-tenant infrastructures put databases under the stress of high analytical query load. The requirement for high throughput contradicts the traditional design of query-at-a-time ...

The analysis of nuclear reactors for performance and safety assessment benefits from the use of computational tools. In this context, this work aims at the development and application of a thermal-hydraulics methodology and related software that respond to ...
