Series Resonant Converters allow an efficient, galvanically isolated, and load-independent DC/DC conversion, and can be used as isolation DC/DC units in two-stage single-phase AC/DC converters. However, in such systems, the single-phase Active Front End un ...

The HERMES project investigates the utilization of surplus wind and solar energy to produce renewable fuels such as hydrogen, methane, and methanol for seasonal storage, thereby supporting carbon neutrality and the energy transition. This initiative aims t ...

The Swiss energy transition, characterized by the nuclear phase-out, relies mainly on the integration of solar photovoltaic (PV), mostly because wind technology faces challenges in local public acceptance. This study aims to analyse Swiss PV and wind gener ...

A low-AC loss Rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) cable, based on the VIPER cable technology has been developed by commonwealth fusion systems for use in high-field, compact tokamaks. The new cable is composed of partitioned and transposed copper ‘petal ...

This paper proposes a tower-foot grounding system model compatible with EMT programs which might be useful for the simulation of lightning transients in overhead lines. The proposed model is based on the solution of the telegrapher's equations and the appl ...

Nowadays, with the increased interest in applications dealing with high-power medium-voltage conversion, there is a strong need to master the design of medium-frequency transformers, which are one of the key components of modern DC transformers. The paper ...

Biogas-based power-to-X technology allows storing renewable electricity, while producing CO2-neutral products. This work investigates the conversion and upgrading of digestion-derived gas mixtures with focus on increasing the operational flexibility of the ...

Power systems with large shares of converter-interfaced renewables may be characterised by low grid inertia due to the lack of frequency containment provided by synchronous generators. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs), which can adjust their power ou ...

In this work, we demonstrate a state-of-the-art high step-up/down dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter designed with GaN transistors, to achieve a high efficiency and large power-density. A quasi-planar matrix transformer with high step-up/down ratio is demo ...

A major concern associated to the massive connection of distributed energy resources is the increasing share of power electronic interfaces resulting in the global inertia reduction of power systems. The recent literature advocated the use of voltage sourc ...

A bidirectional buffered charging unit for EV's is presented, allowing the charge with high power even if the line current capability is limited. The bidirectional buffer is connected to the AC line and is mainly dedicated to vehicles with on-board AC-DC c ...

In this paper, we present GaN-on-Si vertical transistors consisting of a 6.7 pm thick n-p-n heterostructure grown on 6-inch silicon substrates by MOCVD. The fabricated vertical trench gate MOSFETs exhibited E-mode operation with a threshold voltage of 3.3 ...

The paper presents a centralized real-time adaptive and model-based voltage control algorithm for Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). Differently from the available literature, the proposed algorithm merely relies on the control of Battery Energy Storage ...

A new isolated DC-DC converter is presented suited for high voltage applications. It is based on the series connection of NPC inverter cells, using semiconductor devices with lower voltage blocking capability than the total input voltage. The galvanic isol ...

Power Electronics is expected to become a major component in the field of the global electric power management, as it is already today within most of electric power applications like variable speed drives or other conventional user applications. From the e ...

In the context of energy storage with supercapacitors, the so called round trip efficiency is an important factor that can be strongly affected by the characteristics or performances of the used converter. This paper presents a dedicated DC-DC converter, w ...
