Volume electron microscopy is the method of choice for the in situ interrogation of cellular ultrastructure at the nanometer scale, and with the increase in large raw image datasets generated, improving computational strategies for image segmentation and s ...

Deep learning has revolutionized the field of computer vision, a success largely attributable to the growing size of models, datasets, and computational power. Simultaneously, a critical pain point arises as several computer vision applications are deploye ...

Photometric stereo, a computer vision technique for estimating the 3D shape of objects through images captured under varying illumination conditions, has been a topic of research for nearly four decades. In its general formulation, photometric stereo is an ...

Neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders often involve complex pathophysiological mechanisms that are â to this date â only partially understood. A more comprehensive understanding of those microstructural processes and their characterization ...

Lipschitz-constrained neural networks have several advantages over unconstrained ones and can be applied to a variety of problems, making them a topic of attention in the deep learning community. Unfortunately, it has been shown both theoretically and empi ...

Test time augmentation has been shown to be an effective approach to combat domain shifts in deep learning. Despite their promising performance levels, the interpretability of the underlying used models is however low. Saliency maps have been widely used i ...

We address the problem of segmenting anomalies and unusual obstacles in road scenes for the purpose of self-driving safety. The objects in question are not present in the common training sets as it is not feasible to collect and annotate examples for every ...

State-of-the-art object detection and segmentation methods for microscopy images rely on supervised machine learning, which requires laborious manual annotation of training data. Here we present a self-supervised method based on time arrow prediction pre-t ...

This paper introduces TACOSS a text-image alignment approach that allows explainable land cover semantic segmentation by directly integrating semantic concepts encoded from texts. TACOSS combines convolutional neural networks for visual feature extraction ...

Semantic segmentation datasets often exhibit two types of imbalance: \textit{class imbalance}, where some classes appear more frequently than others and \textit{size imbalance}, where some objects occupy more pixels than others. This causes traditional eva ...

Region extraction is a very common task in both Computer Science and Engineering with several applications in object recognition and motion analysis, among others. Most of the literature focuses on regions delimited by straight lines, often in the special ...

The successes of deep learning for semantic segmentation can in be, in part, attributed to its scale: a notion that encapsulates the largeness of these computational architectures and the labeled datasets they are trained on. These resource requirements hi ...

The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) AI learning-based image coding system is an ongoing joint standardization effort between International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and International Te ...

Dense image-based prediction methods have advanced tremendously in recent years. Their remarkable development has been possible due to the ample availability of real-world imagery. While these methods work well on photographs, their abilities do not genera ...

Most recent 6D object pose estimation methods first use object detection to obtain 2D bounding boxes before actually regressing the pose. However, the general object detection methods they use are ill-suited to handle cluttered scenes, thus producing poor ...

Open international challenges are becoming the de facto standard for assessing computer vision and image analysis algorithms. In recent years, new methods have extended the reach of pulmonary airway segmentation that is closer to the limit of image resolut ...

The recent developments of deep learning cover a wide variety of tasks such as image classification, text translation, playing go, and folding proteins. All these successful methods depend on a gradient-based learning algorithm to train a model on massive ...

The high computational costs of deep convolutional neural networks hinder their deployment in real-world applications, including pulmonary nodule detection from CT scans where large 3D image sizes amplify the issue. This paper presents a novel 3D method to ...

There are many approaches to weakly-supervised training of networks to segment 2D images. By contrast, existing approaches to segmenting volumetric images rely on full-supervision of a subset of 2D slices of the 3D volume. We propose an approach to volume ...

While supervised object detection and segmentation methods achieve impressive accuracy, they generalize poorly to images whose appearance significantly differs from the data they have been trained on. To address this when annotating data is prohibitively e ...
