The production of nontoxic, affordable, and efficient antibacterial surfaces is key to the well-being of our societies. In this aim, antibacterial thin films have been prepared using earth-abundant metals deposited using high-power impulse magnetron sputte ...

This study presents the first evidence for the photocatalytic performance of ZnO/CuxO hexagonal nanowires leading to sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation. The chemical composition of the nanowires was determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The sample with the ...

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) deliver ultrashort coherent laser pulses in the X-ray spectral regime, enabling novel investigations into the structure of individual nanoscale samples. In this work, we demonstrate how single-shot small-angle X-ray scatt ...

In the photoemission process electrons are emitted from a solid upon excitation with UV light. From the measurement of their energy and momentum, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) allows to reconstruct the electronic properties of the solid ...

In modern ultrafast optoelectronic technologies based on wide band gap insulators, the non-equilibrium dynamics of photogenerated charges plays a major role. Unravelling the mechanisms of interaction between these charge carriers and their environment is c ...

We present the main specifications of the newly constructed Swiss Free Electron Laser, SwissFEL, and explore its potential impact on ultrafast science. In light of recent achievements at current X-ray free electron lasers, we discuss the potential territor ...

Interactions of proteins with DNA are essential for carrying out DNA's biological functions and performing a cellular cycle. Such processes as DNA replication, expression and repair are performed by an organised action of various proteins. To better unders ...

Harmonium is a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photon source built within the Lausanne Centre for Ultrafast Science (LACUS). Utilising high harmonic generation, photons from 20-110 eV are available to conduct steady-state or ultrafast photoelectron and photoion s ...

The past 3-5 years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of time-resolved X-ray spectroscopic studies, mainly driven by novel technical and methodological developments. The latter include (i) the high repetition rate optical pump/X-ray probe stu ...

We describe the facilities for ultraviolet studies in the femtosecond to nanosecond time domain. These facilities consist of: i) a set-up for deep-ultraviolet spectroscopy in the 260–380 nm range in both pump and probe pulses for transient absorption/refle ...
