Objective. Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a mononeuropathy of the exclusively sensory lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) that is difficult to treat with conservative treatments. Afferents from the LFCN enter the spinal cord through the dorsal root entry ...

Years of globalization, outsourcing and cost cutting have increased supply chain vulnerability calling for more effective risk mitigation strategies. In our research, we analyze supply chain disruptions in a production setting. Using a bilevel optimization ...

Smartphones present many interesting opportunities for survey research, particularly through the use of mobile data collection applications (apps). There is still much to learn, however, about how to integrate apps in general population surveys. Recent stu ...

This paper examines the minimization of the cost for an expected random production output, given an assembly of finished goods from two random inputs, matched in two categories. We describe the optimal input portfolio, first using the standard normal appro ...

Many robotics problems are formulated as optimization problems. However, most optimization solvers in robotics are locally optimal and the performance depends a lot on the initial guess. For challenging problems, the solver will often get stuck at poor loc ...

Advances in mobile computing have paved the way for new types of distributed applications that can be executed solely by mobile devices on Device-to-Device (D2D) ecosystems (e.g., crowdsensing). Sophisticated applications, like cryptocurrencies, need distr ...

Europe is currently transitioning from fossil energy sources to renewable generation of electric power. Although fundamental to reach net-zero targets, intermittent renewables are disrupting conventional methods used in operational planning and design of p ...

Simultaneous prediction of wrist and hand motions is essential for the natural interaction with hand prostheses. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-out Gaussian process (MOGP) model and a multi-task deep learning (MTDL) algorithm to achieve simultaneo ...

The interaction between water vapor and atmos-pheric aerosol leads to enhancement in aerosol water content, which facilitates haze development, but its concentrations, sources, and impacts remain largely unknown in polluted urban environ-ments. Here, we show ...

In the GW approximation, the screened interaction W is a nonlocal and dynamical potential that usually has a complex frequency dependence. A full description of such a dependence is possible but often computationally demanding. For this reason, it is still ...

A central task in high-level synthesis is scheduling: the allocation of operations to clock cycles. The classic approach to scheduling is static, in which each operation is mapped to a clock cycle at compile-time, but recent years have seen the emergence o ...

paper studies exploiting action-level learning (imitation) in the optimal control problem context. Cost functions defined by the optimal control methods are similar to the goal-level learning (emulation) in animals. However, imitating the robot's or others ...

This paper contributes to the intersection of operations research and machine learning in the context of autonomous ridesharing. In this work, autonomous ridesharing operations are reproduced through an event-based simulation approach and are modeled as a ...

Universal inference enables the construction of confidence intervals and tests without regularity conditions by splitting the data into two parts and appealing to Markov's inequality. Previous investigations have shown that the cost of this generality is a ...

The controllability cost for the heat equation as the control time

T

goes to 0 is well-known of the order

e^{C/T}

for some positive constant

C

, depending on the controlled domain and for all initial datum. In this paper, we prove that the constant $C ...

The equilibrium of the archetypal morning commute problem with alpha -,B - gamma preferences has been shown to be unstable with various rational adjustment mechanisms, under both continuous and discrete day-to-day dynamics. It is not clear however whether ...

The organic small molecule 4,4',4",4"'-(5,5-dimethoxycyclopenta-1,3-diene-1,2,3,4-tetrayl)tetrakis(N,N-bis(4-methoxyhenyl)aniline (CPDA 1), shows electrochemical properties very close to spiro-OMeTAD indicating a high compatibility with PSC systems for its ...
