Although the dynamics of collisions between a molecule and a solid surface are ultimately quantum mechanical, decohering effects owing to the large number of interacting degrees of freedom typically obscure the wavelike nature of these events. However, a p ...

Fluorescence lifetime imaging offers the unique ability to monitor the molecular status of the tissue microenvironment. However, the scattering nature of tissues remains a challenge for mesoscopic 3D high resolution imaging. We introduce the design of a me ...

Infrared spectroscopy provides unique information on the composition and dynamics of biochemical systems by resolving the characteristic absorption fingerprints of their constituent molecules. Based on this inherent chemical specificity and the capability ...

We demonstrate the beneficial effect of a pre-annealing step prior to the boron diffusion on passivation and contact resistivity of industrially LPCVD deposited poly-Si/SiOX hole-selective contacts. We investigate the influence of the pre-annealing tempera ...

Spin waves (SWs) are collective excitations of the spin ensemble in systems with magnetic order. In quantum mechanics, a SW is known as a magnon, which is the quasiparticle describing the quantized nature of these wave-like excitations. Magnonics is the re ...

Predictive synthesis–structure–property relationships are at the core of materials design for novel applications. In this regard, correlations between the compositional stoichiometry variations and functional properties are essential for enhancing the perf ...

The different projects of this thesis contribute to improving our understanding of the early chemical evolution of the galaxies. The standard cosmological model states an hierarchical formation of the galaxies, the dwarf galaxies being the first stellar sy ...

Novel two-dimensional metamaterials, known as metasurfaces, have emerged as a breakthrough platform for controlling electromagnetic wave properties at the nanoscale. These metasurfaces consist of subwavelength nanoantennas or so-called meta-atoms, which ca ...

Methylammonium lead iodide doped with cesium (MA(1-x)Cs(x)PbI(3), x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1) thin films were prepared with and without chlorobenzene (CB). X-ray diffraction analysis applying the Rietveld refinement method is carried out, and the effect of Cs ...

Etching an ensemble of vacancy defects (nanopores) in single-layer graphene (SLG) to obtain a high density of nanopores with an effective size that enables high-performance gas sieving is challenging. This is because nanopore nucleation and expansion are u ...

Described is a closed-loop control scheme capable of stabilizing a parametrically excited nonlinear structure in several vibration modes. By setting the relative phase between the spatially filtered response and the excitation, the open-loop unstable solut ...

Negative hydrogen or deuterium ions are the precursor particles used to generate a high power beam of neutrals in order to heat the tokamak plasma core of magnetic fusion devices, inject current, and to some extent control instabilities. In the case of ITE ...

Living photovoltaics represent a growing class of microbial devices that are based on whole cell–electrode interactions. The limited charge transfer at the cell–electrode interface represents a significant bottleneck in realizing an efficient technology. T ...

The development of near-infrared (NIR) photodetection technologies is driven by emerging applications such as medical imaging or optical sensors for electronic displays and machine vision. An all-organic upconverter (OUD) is a device that converts incident ...

Preliminary results investigating the microstructure, bonding and effect of beryllium oxide formation on retention in the JET ITER-like wall beryllium tiles, are presented. The tiles have been investigated by several techniques: Scanning Electron Microscop ...

Optical sensors based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) demonstrate tradeoffs that limit their use in in vivo and in vitro environments. Sensor characteristics are primarily governed by the non-covalent wrapping used to suspend the hydrophobic SWC ...

The decays Lambda(0)(b) -> psi(2S)pK(-) and Lambda(0)(b) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-)pK(-) are observed in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1), collected in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies by the LHCb ...

Chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene allows for fine-tuning their physical and chemical properties to realize fascinating new fundamental phenomena as well as exotic applications. A primary challenge in such endeavors is the n ...
