This work explores the development and the analysis of an efficient reduced order model for the study of a bifurcating phenomenon, known as the Coanda effect, in a multi-physics setting involving fluid and solid media. Taking into consideration a fluid-str ...

Bridges are a critical component of national infrastructures and economies. A significant percentage of bridges built all around the world are made of reinforced concrete which according to building codes have a life span between 80-100 years. However, str ...

Amorphous solids such as coffee foam, toothpaste, or mayonnaise display a transient creep flow when a stress E is suddenly imposed. The associated strain rate is commonly found to decay in time as gamma_ -t-nu, followed either by arrest or by a sudden flui ...

The configuration of a hydraulic fracture (HF) propagating perpendicular to the isotropy plane of a transversely isotropic (TI) material is encountered in most sedimentary basins. We account for both elastic and fracture toughness anisotropy, and investiga ...

Traction-separation relations due to large scale bridging in composites are very important in modeling their fracture response. Several works demonstrated that such relations are dependent upon the specimen's stiffness and loading conditions. Experimental ...

Aggregate interlocking is a phenomenon occurring when the opposite sides of a concrete crack slide relative to each other. Due to surface roughness, protruding material from one crack-side can engage with the opposite one and thus exchange forces. This aff ...

Spurred by developments in digital fabrication, there has been an increase in the application of the Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) technique in timber plate structures. Despite its increase in popularity, there have been very few systematic investig ...

This paper presents an experimental method to follow in-situ the chains network alteration of filled vulcanized rubbers induced by deformation. Macroscopic damage is first investigated on a series of EPDM by quantifying void fraction via Digital Image Corr ...

Nanocrystalline (NC) metals have attracted widespread interest in materials science due to their high strength compared to coarse-grained counterparts. It is well know that during uniaxial deformation, the stress-strain behaviour exhibits an extraordinary ...

To strengthen a reinforced concrete (RC) slab with deficient shear resistance, it is proposed to add to the top of the slab a 25-50 mm thick layer of ultra-high performance fibre reinforced cement-based composite (UHPFRC) with small diameter rebars (R-UHPF ...

The material characterization of steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC), which is required for its implementation in design codes, should be based on nominal properties that describe its postcracking strength in tension. In the case of brittle and quasi-br ...

Angle-and energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction experiments in a radial geometry were performed in the diamond anvil cell on polycrystalline platinum samples at pressures up to 63 GPa. Observed yield strength and texture depend on grain size. For samples wit ...

The damping properties of unidirectional, 0/90 and twill 2/2 flax fibre (FF) reinforced epoxy composites containing 40 vol% of fibres have been measured by vibration beam testing (VBT). The influence of the impregnation quality, the fibre/matrix adhesion, ...

The purpose of this thesis is to characterize internal strains in polymeric materials due to consolidation. In view of this, optical Fiber Bragg Grating sensors are an excellent non-destructive tool for internal strain characterization and damage detection ...
