A large fraction (47%) of the world's uranium is mined by a technique called “In Situ Recovery” (ISR). This mining technique involves the injection of a leaching fluid (acidic or alkaline) into a uranium-bearing aquifer and the pumping of the resulting sol ...

For an energy source to qualify as sustainable, it must maximize the efficiency with which it uses natural resources while minimizing the amounts of waste it produces. Currently deployed nuclear power plants however use a very limited amount of the energy ...

This thesis presents a systematic study on the merits and limitations on using pin-by-pin resolution and transport theory based approaches for nuclear core design calculations. Starting from the lattice codes and an optimal cross section generation scheme, ...

Uranium nitrides are important materials with potential for application as fuels for nuclear power generation, and as highly active catalysts. Molecular nitride compounds could provide important insight into the nature of the uranium–nitride bond, but curr ...

The salt-elimination reaction of the complex [Na2U(bis-salophen)] with metal halides provides an entry to the synthesis of well-defined homobimetallic uranium–uranium and rare heterobimetallic uranium–cobalt and uranium–nickel complexes supported by a redo ...

The reduction of the nitride-bridged diuranium(IV) complex Cs[{U(OSi((OBu)-Bu-t)(3))(3)}(2)(mu-N)] affords the first example of a uranium nitride complex containing uranium in the +III oxidation state. Two nitride-bridged complexes containing the heteromet ...

Molecular nitrogen (N-2) is cheap and widely available, but its unreactive nature is a challenge when attempting to functionalize it under mild conditions with other widely available substrates (such as carbon monoxide, CO) to produce value-added compounds ...

Historically, it is believed that crystalline uraninite, produced via the abiotic reduction of hexavalent uranium (U-(VI)) is the dominant reduced U species formed in low-temperature uranium roll-front ore deposits. Here we show that non-crystalline U-(IV) ...

Hundreds of tons of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition were used in previous armed conflicts in Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia/Kosovo. The majority (>90%) of DU penetrators miss their target and, if left in the environment, corrode in these postcon ...

Uranium-based compounds have been put forward as ideal candidates for the design of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with improved properties, but to date, only two examples of exchange-coupled 3d-5f SMM containing uranium have been reported and both are bas ...

We performed first-principles calculations of the momentum distributions of annihilating electron-positron pairs in vacancies in uranium dioxide. Full atomic relaxation effects (due to both electronic and positronic forces) were taken into account and self ...
