Motivated by the experimental observation of a quantized 5/2 thermal conductance at filling nu = 5/2, a result incompatible with both the Pfaffian and the anti-Pfaffian states, we have pushed the expansion of the effective Hamiltonian of the 5/2-quantized ...

We explore the interplay between randomness and magnetic frustration in the series of S = 12 Heisenberg square-lattice compounds Sr2CuTe1???xWxO6. Substituting W for Te alters the magnetic interactions dramatically, from strongly nearest-neighbor to next-n ...

Quantum spin liquids are exotic states of matter that form when strongly frustrated magnetic interactions induce a highly entangled quantum paramagnet far below the energy scale of the magnetic interactions. Three-dimensional cases are especially challengi ...

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice is an iconic frustrated three-dimensional spin system with a rich phase diagram. Besides hosting several ordered phases, the model is debated to possess a spin-liquid ground state when only nearest-ne ...

We propose a scheme for universal quantum computing based on Kramers rare-earth ions. Their nuclear spins in the presence of a Zeeman-split electronic crystal field ground state act as "passive" qubits that store quantum information. The "active" qubits ar ...

Quantum criticality may be essential to understanding a wide range of exotic electronic behavior; however, conclusive evidence of quantum critical fluctuations has been elusive in many materials of current interest. An expected characteristic feature of qu ...

We investigate the spin relaxation of Ho single atom magnets on MgO/Ag(100) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We find that the spin relaxation is thermally activated at low field, while it remains larger than 1000 s up to 30 K and 8 T. This ...

Intersystem crossing (ISC) rates of transition-metal complexes are determined by the complex interplay of a molecule's electronic and structural dynamics. To broaden our understanding of these key factors, we investigate the case of the prototypical d(8)-d ...

Magnetic materials can host skyrmions, which are topologically non-trivial spin textures. In chiral magnets with cubic lattice symmetry, all previously observed skyrmion phases require thermal fluctuations to become thermodynamically stable in bulk materia ...

The fluorescence properties of the BODIPY dye and its two meso-substituted derivatives, tert-butyl- and phenyl-BODIPY, are rationalized. The non emissive behavior of the latter two are attributed to the energetically accessible low-lying conical intersecti ...

An exciton-polariton is a quasi-particle that emerges from the strong coupling between an exciton and a photon. Recently, the studies of the exciton-polariton have been receiving a great deal of attention in terms of both fundamental physics and potential ...

Gas-phase techniques are promising for studying intrinsically disordered peptides and proteins, as they can be implemented in a conformer-selective way. One of the issues that prevent them from finding a broader use is the question of to which extent the s ...

The properties of geometrically confined superconductors significantly differ from their bulk counterparts. Here, we demonstrate the geometrical impact for superconducting scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tips, where the confinement ranges from the atom ...

Bismuth Ferrite (BFO) nanoparticles (BFO-NP) display interesting optical (nonlinear response) and magnetic properties which make them amenable for bio-oriented diagnostic applications as intra- and extra membrane contrast agents. Due to the relatively rece ...

Exciton-polaritons are hybrid quasi-particles, eigenstates of the strong coupling regime between light and matter. Their Bose-Einstein condensation has been recently demonstrated, opening the way to several fundamental investigations on the associated phen ...
