Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies have enabled the manufacturing of parts with complex geometries that were previously not feasible with conventional manufacturing. Unfortunately, many commercial engineering alloys (with the exception of alloy ...

Body-centered-cubic (BCC) high entropy alloys (HEAs) can show exceptionally high strength up to high temperatures. Mechanistic theories are needed to guide alloy discovery within the immense multicomponent HEA compositional space. Here, two new theories fo ...

Many metal alloys are strengthened by controlling precipitation to achieve an optimal peak-aged condi-tion where the strength-limiting processes of precipitate shearing and Orowan looping are thought to be comparable. Qualitative models have long captured ...

Weighted least squares polynomial approximation uses random samples to determine projections of functions onto spaces of polynomials. It has been shown that, using an optimal distribution of sample locations, the number of samples required to achieve quasi ...

An increasing number of studies are using landscape genomics to investigate local adaptation in wild and domestic populations. The implementation of this approach requires the sampling phase to consider the complexity of environmental settings and the burd ...

Laser powder bed fusion is an efficient technique for additive manufacturing of metallic materials. The quality of the material produced depends on the optimization of a large range of build parameters and the complex thermo-mechanical build process is pro ...

A study of the lineshape of the chi(c1) (3872) state is made using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. Candidate chi(c1)(3872) and ...

In this study, we propose a novel, high-conductivity multi-channel heterostructure based on lattice-matched InAlN/GaN channels with modulation-doping-induced two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs). To facilitate device processing, the channel period thickn ...

p>We study the dynamics of optimization and the generalization properties of one-hidden layer neural networks with quadratic activation function in the overparametrized regime where the layer width m is larger than the input dimension d. We conside ...

Process Integration techniques are powerful in analysing the energy usage of industrial plants and designing retrofit solutions for increasing their energy efficiency. However they are far from constituting the industrial practice. One primary cause for th ...

In diffusion social learning over weakly-connected graphs, it has been shown recently that influential agents shape the beliefs of non-influential agents. This paper analyzes this mechanism more closely and addresses two main questions. First, the article ...

Near interfacial residual stresses are investigated in a joint composed of aluminum alloy and dual phase steel. A small step neutron diffraction scan was initially performed to determine the weld interface position along the measured transverse cross secti ...

The ongoing pandemic of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), caused by the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2), highlights the need for broad-spectrum antiviral drugs. In this Essay, it is argued that such agents alrea ...

Welding of steel plates is accompanied by residual stresses that increase as the constraint provided by the welded components becomes greater. Consequently, crack initiation has been reported after welding thick plates due to the high residual stresses dev ...

In this letter, we present a new concept for normally-off AlGaN/GaN-on-Si MOS-HEMTs based on the combination of p-GaN, tri-gate and MOS structures to achieve high threshold voltage (V-TH) and low on-resistance (R-ON). The p-GaN is used to engineer the band ...

Enhanced sampling techniques have become an essential tool in computational chemistry and physics, where they are applied to sample activated processes that occur on a time scale that is inaccessible to conventional simulations. Despite their popularity, i ...

We report a measurement of the branching fraction and final-state asymmetry for the (B) over bar -> (KSK -/+)-K-0 pi(+/-) decays. The analysis is based on a data sample of 711 fb(-1) collected at the gamma(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB ...

A search for the Xi(++)(cc) baryon through the Xi(++)(cc) -> D(+)pK(-)pi(+) decay is performed with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb(-1) recorded by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. ...
