Aims. We derived galaxy colour selections from Euclid and ground-based photometry, aiming to accurately define background galaxy samples in cluster weak-lensing analyses. These selections have been implemented in the Euclid data analysis pipelines for gala ...

Patterns in nature arise from processes interacting across a continuum of spatial scales, where new relationships emerge at each level of investigation. These patterns are nested features encompassing fine-scale local patterns, such as topography and geolo ...

Connectivity between the hyporheic zone and the flow is essential for the development of benthos and the reproductive success of spawning fish. The infiltration of fine sediment leads to clogging of the riverbed, reducing porosity and vertical water exchan ...

Genome duplication, transcription, and translation are among many crucial cellular processes that need to be performed with high fidelity. However, those extremely low error rates cannot be explained with simple equilibrium thermodynamic considerations. Th ...

The resilience of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) to a high mutational pressure depends, in part, on negative purifying selection in the germline. A paradigm in the field has been that such selection, at least in part, takes place in primordial germ cells ...

Carbon nanostructures formed through physical synthesis come in a variety of sizes and shapes. With the end goal of rationalizing synthetic pathways of carbon nanostructures as a function of tunable parameters in the synthesis, we investigate how the initi ...

Recently, a new thermally activated distortion with amplification (TADA) effect has been reported in red gold alloys caused by the A1 -> L1(0) phase transformation. The macroscopic amplification is due to the persistence of variant selection nucleated unde ...

Some non-linear behaviors in the dynamics of complex systems using the Scale Relativity Theory in the form of Multifractal Hydrodynamic Model are analyzed. By assimilating any complex system to a mathematical multifractal-type object, it is shown that the ...

Cu-Be alloys provide excellent electrical and mechanical properties, but present serious health hazards during manufacturing. Among alternative alloys, the Cu-Ti system has the highest yield strength; however, Ti cannot be easily solutionized at concentrat ...

The influence of post-heat treatment on the microstructure and properties of 4D printed Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni (wt. %) shape memory alloy (SMA) produced via a laser powder bed fusion process is investigated in this study. It is shown that heat-treatment temp ...

In situ multiaxial loading during neutron diffraction tests were undertaken on a low-alloyed Quenched and Partitioning (Q&P) Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) Bainitic Ferrite (TBF) steel with dispersed austenite particles. The effect of stress tria ...

Red gold alloys owe their warm and attractive colour to the combination of gold and copper atoms. Thanks to their good mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion, red gold alloys are used in luxury industries as well as in dentistry. Around the equi ...

Two new ferrito-martensitic oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels reinforced with (Y, Ti, O) nanoparticles were elaborated using a high-energy attritor. The milled powder was consolidated by hot extrusion at 1050 degrees C. The two types of ODS steels ...

Developing molecules that emulate the properties of naturally occurring ice-binding proteins (IBPs) is a daunting challenge. Rather than relying on the (limited) existing structure–property relationships that have been established for IBPs, here we report ...

This study presents a thermomechanical processing concept which is capable of exploiting the full industrial application potential of recently introduced AlMgZn(Cu) alloys. The beneficial linkage of alloy design and processing allows not only to satisfy th ...

Cross-validation is commonly used to select the recommendation algorithms that will generalize best on yet unknown data. Yet, in many situations the available dataset used for cross-validation is scarce and the selected algorithm might not be the best suit ...

The microstructural evolution of the two austenitic alloys Fe-20Mn-3Al-0.7C wt pct and Fe-20Mn-6Al-0.7C wt pct when different thermal and thermomechanical treatments are performed has been studied. To this end, a generic industrial die of 100 ton capacity ...

An in-situ high resolution digital image correlation investigation during uniaxial tensile deformation reveals the recoverable and the non-recoverable strain mechanisms in a Ni51Ti49 alloy with a mean grain size of 35 mu m. Recoverable strain is due to the ...

Variant selection during the A1→L10 transformation in a polycrystalline red gold alloy close to equiatomic Au-Cu composition has been extensively studied by Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) in our previous work. The use of a mathematical description ...

The complex and intricate microstructure of B19′ martensite in shape memory nickel titanium alloys is generally explained with the Phenomenological Theory of Martensitic Crystallography (PTMC). Over the last decade, we have developed an alternative approac ...
