This work presents a novel type of carbon fiber reinforcement that allows the fabrication of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) whose properties are independent of their aspect ratio. The reinforcement consists of stiff carbon fibers continuously distri ...

Residual stresses in hot-rolled wide flange steel cross sections may lead to premature yielding, accelerated corrosion and brittle fracture of steel members. The above phenomena lead to a loss of a steel member's stiffness and resistance under mechanical l ...

Existing shear-cracked structures need to be reliably verified in order to avoid redundant interventions. Code provisions often raise shear safety and/or fatigue life concerns of the reinforcement subjected to stress concentrations due to cyclic dowel acti ...

A Finite Element Model is developed to represent the mechanical behavior of WC-10 wt.% Co in compression tests. In this research, realistic three-dimensional model is obtained by slicing a sample by Focused Ion Beam and reconstituting it, resulting in two ...

Amorphous materials exhibit complex material properties with strongly nonlinear behaviors. Below a yield stress they behave as plastic solids, while they start to yield above a critical stress sigma(c). A key quantity controlling plasticity which is, howev ...

Laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process that uses a laser to selectively melt a powder bed. This process can build dense samples with complicated geometries from a wide variety of metallic alloys. In this thesis, LPBF of al ...

Residual stresses are investigated for the first time in a dissimilar AA1050-DP450 steel magnetic pulse weld using neutron diffraction. Close to the joint interface, tensile residual stresses are observed in the Al sheet and compressive residual stresses a ...

Laser powder bed fusion is an efficient technique for additive manufacturing of metallic materials. The quality of the material produced depends on the optimization of a large range of build parameters and the complex thermo-mechanical build process is pro ...

One of the main challenges in ultrafast material science is to trigger phase transitions with short pulses of light. Here we show how strain waves, launched by electronic and structural precursor phenomena, determine a coherent macroscopic transformation p ...

Nb1-xTixNy thin films with different nitrogen contents (0.5 < y < 1.2) and Nb/Ti ratios (0

Integrated circuit packaging technology has become a prime design consideration for the develop-ment of electronic system concepts. One key issue is the bonding layer between chip and substrate. Currently, high-lead solder materials are being used, which a ...

In HSS welded structures, HFMI allows fatigue strength improvement factors by inducing compressive residual stresses, cold-worked surface region and modifying the weld toe shape. According to the literature, the factors are proposed based on failures at CA ...

Additive manufacturing is a promising and rapidly rising technology in metal processing. However, besides a number of key advantages the constitution of a part through a complex thermo-mechanical process implies also some severe issues with the potential o ...

Microplastics pollution in river systems has generated great concern; however, few studies have focused on the contributions of multiple influencing factors to microplastics in river systems. In the current study, we utilized data on microplastics in surfa ...

The preparation, characterization, and antibacterial testing of Cu-Ag sputtered polyurethane (PU) catheters are addressed in this study. PU catheters with different atomic ratios Cu:Ag have been sputtered and led to different optical properties as followed ...

The aim of this project is to understand the correlation between alloy composition and the build-up of internal stresses in 18 carat Au-Ag-Cu alloys under thermo-mechanical loads. The copper rich end of this ternary system exhibits order-hardening of the e ...

In microelectronics applications, SnAgCu lead-free solder joints play the important role of ensuring both the mechanical and electrical integrity of the components. In such applications, the SnAgCu joints are subjected to elevated homologous temperatures f ...

The importance of additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, has grown exponentially in the recent years thanks to its high flexibility to manufacture intricate parts. This process can be divided into many different sub-categories, depending on the ...

Near interfacial residual stresses are investigated in a joint composed of aluminum alloy and dual phase steel. A small step neutron diffraction scan was initially performed to determine the weld interface position along the measured transverse cross secti ...

This work addresses the issue of attaching the force-centring part (a round ball) to the load cell of a force sensor, a piezoresistive thick-film Wheatstone bridge deposited onto a ceramic cantilever. As the current soldering process requires expensive met ...
