LES and wind tunnel studies have shown significant benefit when allowing turbines (T) in a wind farm to adopt different heights. This work presents two new genetic algorithms (GA) that perform wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) involving continuous and t ...

We present a lightweight goal-based model for multimodal, probabilistic trajectory prediction for urban driving. Previous conditioned-on-goal methods have used map information in order to establish a set of potential goals and then complete the correspondi ...

The immobilization of molecular catalysts imposes spatial constraints on their active site. We reveal that in bifunctional catalysis such constraints can also be utilized as an appealing handle to boost intrinsic activity through judicious control of the a ...

Wind-tunnel experiments are performed to investigate the effect of minor modifications to the roof edge shape on the power performance and wake characteristics of a horizontal-axis wind turbine sited on a cube-shaped building. Three roof edge shapes are co ...

Chemical gas dispersion can represent a severe threat to human and animal lives, as well as to the environment. Constructing a map of the distribution of gas in a fast and reliable manner is critical to ensure accurate monitoring of at-risk facilities and ...

Analytical wind turbine wake models are widely used to predict the wake velocity deficit. In these models, the wake growth rate is a key parameter specified mainly with empirical formulations. In this study, a new physics-based model is proposed and valida ...

Forest maps are essential to understand forest dynamics. Due to the increasing availability of remote sensing data and machine learning models like convolutional neural networks, forest maps can these days be created on large scales with high accuracy. Com ...

Fine-grained population maps are needed in several domains, like urban planning, environmental monitoring, public health, and humanitarian operations. Unfortunately, in many countries only aggregate census counts over large spatial units are collected, mor ...

In this study, the wake behind a wind turbine located on an escarpment is investigated using particle-image velocimetry in a wind tunnel. Five different escarpment models are used, which vary in the windward side shape from forward facing steps (FFS) with ...

Waste heat recovery from passenger car internal combustion engines by means of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system is promising for reducing CO2 emissions. In this study, different cycle configurations capable of converting waste heat from both coolant a ...
