IntroductionThe current assessment and standardization of microsurgical skills are subjective, posing challenges in reliable skill evaluation. We aim to address these limitations by developing a quantitative and objective framework for accurately assessing ...

Electrical stimulation of the visual nervous system could improve the quality of life of patients affected by acquired blindness by restoring some visual sensations, but requires careful optimization of stimulation parameters to produce useful perceptions. ...

Language has shaped human evolution and led to the desire to endow machines with language abilities. Recent advancements in natural language processing enable us to achieve this breakthrough in human-machine interaction. However, introducing conversational ...

Recent work suggests that serial dependence, where perceptual decisions are biased toward previous stimuli, arises from the prior that sensory input is temporally correlated. However, existing studies have mostly used random stimulus sequences that do not ...

Conscious perception is preceded by long periods of unconscious processing. These periods are crucial for analyzing temporal information and for solving the many ill-posed problems of vision. An important question is what starts and ends these windows and ...

Detecting manipulations in facial images and video has become an increasingly popular topic in media forensics community. At the same time, deep convolutional neural networks have achieved exceptional results on deepfake detection tasks. Despite the remark ...

The Customer Experience Management at the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) experiments with new technologies and methods to capture experiences and perceptions of passengers to design safe and customer friendly environments. First, a new methodological approac ...

Research indicates that makerspaces equip students with the practical skills needed to build their own projects and thrive in the twenty-first-century workforce. While the appeal of makerspaces lies in their spirit of tinkering and community-driven ethos, ...

Building occupants are continuously exposed to multiple indoor environmental stimuli, including thermal, visual, acoustic, and air quality related factors. Moreover, personal and contextual aspects can be regarded as additional domains influencing occupant ...

Objective Temperature–color interaction effects on subjective perception and physiological responses are investigated using a novel hybrid experimental method combining thermal and visual stimuli from real and virtual reality (VR) environments, respectivel ...

Although it is frequently claimed that learning analytics can improve self-evaluation and self-regulated learning by students, most learning analytics tools appear to have been developed as a response to existing data rather than with a clear pedagogical m ...

The profound impact of daylight on occupants is broadly recognized in the fields of architecture and lighting. In particular, the façade and its interplay with light is a central design element, while the diversity of daylight in space is widely acknowledg ...

Since 1895, when the Lumière brothers came out with the projected cinematograph, motion pictures and more generally multimedia contents have considerably improved and are still experiencing a very dynamic development. Advances involved improving various mo ...

Background When single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is applied over the primary motor cortex (M1) with sufficient intensity, it evokes muscular contractions (motor-evoked potentials, MEPs) and muscle twitches (TMS-evoked movements). Partic ...

Identifying nuclei is often a critical first step in analyzing microscopy images of cells and classical image processing algorithms are most commonly used for this task. Recent developments in deep learning can yield superior accuracy, but typical evaluati ...

Quality assessment of light field images poses new questions and challenges, due to the enriched nature of the content and the possibilities it offers at the rendering step. Image-based rendering is conventionally used to showcase the increased capabilitie ...

Since its invention in the 19th century, photography has allowed to create durable images of the world around us by capturing the intensity of light that flows through a scene, first analogically by using light-sensitive material, and then, with the advent ...

In this paper, we introduce our recent studies on human perception in audio event classification. In particular, the pre-trained model VGGish is used as feature extractor to process audio data, and DenseNet is trained by and used as feature extractor for o ...

The recent advances in light field acquisition and rendering technologies have attracted a lot of interest from the scientific community. Due to their large amount of data, efficient compression of light field content is of paramount importance for storage ...

This article presents a novel experimental method that uses a virtual reality (VR) headset, aiming to provide an alternative environment for the conduction of subjective assessments of daylit spaces. This method can overcome the difficulty of controlling t ...
