Polycarbonate polymers find widespread use for a variety of applications. Driven by the need to transition away from fossil‐based resources, there is increasing interest in exploring bio‐based monomers for the synthesis of polycarbonates. One interesting c ...

The ability to drive the plasma potential in a magnetized plasma column using strongly negatively biased emissive cathode is experimentally demonstrated. By analysing an extensive experimental dataset, and in particular the evolution of the radial profiles ...

In this study, we develop and experimentally validate the integration of a localized metallic back-gate into a multi-gate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) field-effect transistor (FET), aimed at enabling front-gate coupling efficiency from room to cryogenic (mK) ...

Modifying the properties of bio-based materials has garnered increasing interest in recent years. In related applications, the ability of alginates to complex with metal ions has been shown to be effective in liquid-to-gel transitions, useful in the develo ...

In Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), resin precursors of thermoset or, more recently, thermoplastic polymers are generally employed, raising issues related to the chemical reaction taking place during and after part processing. In this study, already polymeriz ...

Since a few decades our planet has been loaded with billion tons of synthetic polymer-based materials, commonly named plastics. The large scale of plastic production, associated with its limited recyclability, are the driving force for the accumulation of ...

The discovery of twisted bilayer graphene with tunable superconductivity has diverted great focus at the world of twisted van der Waals heterostructures. Here we propose a paradigm for bilayer materials, where covalent bonding replaces the van der Waals in ...

Supramolecular interactions play an important role in defining the structure and the resulting mechanical properties of materials. For instance, interchain hydrogen-bonding in PAs gives them superior strength and stiffness in engineering materials, while t ...

Organic semiconductors are important components for applications in different fields of technology, as their advantages include the possibility of low-temperature processing as well as low-cost, large-area manufacturing based on solution-based processes, c ...

Tip-enhanced optical effects have enabled a wide palette of nanoscale investigation techniques and recently they were successfully used to modify and manipulate matter with nanoscale spatial resolution. We contribute to this latter area by reporting a viab ...

This Thesis is built around 4 topics, which share in common that they all take advantage of the assets of controlled radical polymerization to either (i) prepare well-defined model systems to address fundamental research questions with regard to the sensit ...

Critical quantum systems are a promising resource for quantum metrology applications, due to the diverging susceptibility developed in proximity of phase transitions. Here, we assess the metrological power of parametric Kerr resonators undergoing driven-di ...

Electrocatalysts play an important part on the route towards environmental friendly energy sources. They support modern technologies like fuel cells to move further away from the utilization of fossil fuels and the resulting CO2 emission into our atmospher ...

Here we highlight 35 (+1) global researchers approximately under the age of 35. The annual cohort was self-generated by initial seed invitations sent by the editorial team, with each contributor inviting the next in a self-selecting unrestricted (nominally ...

Bio-based resins, obtained from renewable raw materials, are a more sustainable alternative to oil-based resins for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The incorporation of lignin in those resins has the potential to enhance their performance. This ...

There is currently considerable interest in developing stiff, strong, tough, and heat resistant poly(lactide) (PLA) based materials with improved melt elasticity in response to the increasing demand for sustainable plastics. However, simultaneous optimizat ...

The development of reusable fire-safe polymers with a prolonged lifetime heralds the switch for a transition towards circular economy. In this framework, we report a novel phosphonated thermoset which is composed of networked phosphonate esters containing ...

The invention describes a composition containing a) a functionalized polymer (10) that comprises at least one polyester segment (13) and at least one, in particular at least two, polymer aggregating segment (11, 12) capable of forming non-covalent bonds ba ...

Biodegradable polymers are increasingly at the heart of therapeutic devices. Particularly in the form of thin and elongated fibers, they offer an effective strategy for controlled-release in a variety of biomedical configurations such as sutures, scaffolds ...

Donor-acceptor (D-A) extended copolymers have shown great potential to be exploited for intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) because of their modular tunability and intrinsic ability to incorporate low-lying charge-transfer (CT) and a triplet-pair (1TT) st ...
