Internal transport barriers (ITB) form through turbulence suppression, often observed when the safety factor profile exhibits an off-axis minimum. This work aims at improving our understanding of the conditions enabling the development of an ITB, using a m ...

In order to cope with the decarbonization challenge faced by many countries, fusion is one of the few alternatives to fossil fuels for the production of electricity. Two devices invented in the middle of the previous century have emerged as the most promis ...

The implementation of three-dimensional magnetic fields, such as the ones of stellarators, in the GBS code (Ricci et al 2012 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion54 124047; Giacomin et al 2022 J. Comput. Phys.464 111294) is presented, and simulation results are dis ...

Plasma turbulence plays a fundamental role in determining the performances of magnetic confinement fusion devices, such as tokamaks. Advances in computer science, combined with the development of efficient physical models, have significantly improved our u ...

The impact of electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD)-driven current on toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) in experiments on the AUG tokamak is investigated numerically. The dynamical evolution of the plasma profiles and equilibria are modelled w ...

The design point that had been chosen for EU DEMO in 2016 is reviewed here and a modification is proposed with a lower aspect ratio. Previously the same aspect ratio, A, was chosen for EU DEMO as in major tokamak experiments including ITER (A = 3.1), and, ...

While it is important to design stellarators with high magnetohydrodynamic stability β-limit, it is also crucial to ensure that good magnetic surfaces exist in a large range of β values. As β increases, pressure-driven currents perturb the vacuum magnetic ...

The JET hybrid scenario has been developed from low plasma current carbon wall discharges to the record-breaking Deuterium-Tritium plasmas obtained in 2021 with the ITER-like Be/W wall. The development started in pure Deuterium with refinement of the plasm ...

A discharge with electron temperature up to 14 keV has been achieved in EAST. Analysis of the electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) efficiency at high electron temperature under EAST parameters is presented using C3PO/LUKE code. Simulation results show t ...

A key challenge for the development of fusion reactors based on magnetic confinement, such as tokamaks and stellarators, is the control of the turbulent processes. The most prominent feature of turbulence in the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL), the volume between t ...

Tokamaks allow to confine fusion plasma with magnetic fields. The prediction/reconstruction of the last closed-flux surface (LCFS) is one of the primary challenges in the control of the magnetic configuration. The evolution in time of the LCFS is determine ...

External kink modes, believed to be the drive of the 0-limiting resistive wall mode, are strongly stabilized by the presence of a separatrix. We thus propose a novel mechanism explaining the appearance of long-wavelength global instabilities in free bounda ...

Flux-tube (local) gyrokinetic codes are widely used to simulate drift-wave turbulence in magnetic confinement devices. While a large number of studies show that flux-tube codes provide an excellent approximation for turbulent transport in medium-large devi ...

For the European DEMO fusion reactor, several options of the Toroidal Field (TF) coil design were proposed. The winding of the TF coil option 1 is based on React&Wind (RW), Nb3Sn, graded conductors in order to optimize the amount of superconductor accordin ...

In situ, two-dimensional (2D) Langmuir probe measurements across a large part of the TCV outer divertor are reported in L-mode discharges with and without divertor baffles. This provides detailed insights into time averaged profiles, particle fluxes, and f ...

Results of a three-dimensional, flux-driven, electrostatic, global, two-fluid turbulence simulation for a five-field period stellarator with an island divertor are presented. The numerical simulation is carried out with the GBS code, recently extended to s ...

The excitation of toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) using prescribed external electromagnetic perturbations (hereafter 'antenna') acting on a confined toroidal plasma, as well as its nonlinear couplings to other modes in the system, is studied. ...

Elongated plasmas lead to improved performance in tokamaks but make the plasma prone to vertical instability, which requires active feedback control, a critical issue for future fusion reactors. Vertical control was optimized for the TCV tokamak by applyin ...

In this paper, we report the novel experimental observation of both unstable and stable toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) measured simultaneously in a JET tokamak plasma. The three-ion-heating scheme (D-DNBI-He-3) is employed to accelerate deute ...

Full conversion from ohmic to runaway electron (RE) driven current was observed in the tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) following massive injection of neon through a disruption mitigation valve into a low-density limited circular plasma. Following a ...
