Realizing a hydrogen economy strongly requires alkaline water electrolysis to achieve large-scale generation of H2, but lacks stable and efficient catalysts. The insufficient active sites in Ni(OH)2 impair the catalytic performance of alkaline HER. Herein, ...

Caprock formations, such as shales, play a key role in safe underground CO2 storage since they serve as a hydromechanical barrier that prevents migration of the injected CO2 to the surface. While their hydromechanical response is important to ensure their ...

A large number of countries have engaged themselves in an energy transition towards more re- newable energy in their energy systems. Motivations stem mainly from the need to reduce CO2 emissions, and from a desire of their population to phase out technolog ...

Waste heat recovery from passenger car internal combustion engines by means of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system is promising for reducing CO2 emissions. In this study, different cycle configurations capable of converting waste heat from both coolant a ...

Given the challenges related to climate change and dependency from fossil fuels, modification of the energy systems infrastructure to increase the share of renewable energy is a priority in urban energy planning. The high heating density in cities makes it ...

Seasonal snow cover provides essential insulation for mountain ecosystems, but expected changes in precipitation patterns and snow cover duration due to global warming can influence the activity of soil microbial communities. In turn, these changes have th ...

Carbon Capture and Storage ( CCS) is the only available technology that allows us to significantly reduce our CO2 emissions while keeping up with the ever-increasing global energy demand. Research in CCS focuses on reducing the costs of carbon capture and ...

Sugarcane is a major crop cultivated globally and the residue left over after the crop harvest and extraction of juice is a good biomass source that can be used for the production of several useful chemicals. The sugarcane bagasse is an excellent substrate ...

Developing a methodology that allows identifying maximumelectricity production with the help of Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) from the waste heat of an industrial process, at the lowest specific cost, without jeopardising the increase of the industrial proc ...

High Performance Buildings (HPB), including Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) and nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) are emerging as an important market in Europe and around the world. However, there are very few studies that aim to model the process of H ...

A new gas turbine-fuel cell Hybrid Cycle is proposed. The fuel cell advantageously operates close or under atmospheric pressure and is fully integrated with the gas turbine that is based on an Inverted Brayton-Joule Cycle. The idea of the invention is to c ...

In the public and scientific debate on biofuels, ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass is generally the most popular alternative that may allow for a sustainable production. Compared to thermochemical processing of biomass which assures a complete conversio ...

This work evaluates three techniques of calibrating capacitance (dielectric) spectrometers used for on-line monitoring of biomass: modeling of cell properties using the theoretical Cole-Cole equation, linear regression of dual-frequency capacitance measure ...

This paper addresses a methodology for the optimal conceptual design of thermochemical fuel production processes from biomass. A decomposed modelling approach with separate energy-flow, energy-integration and economic models is presented and coupled to mul ...

Some plants able to take up heavy metals from contaminated soils offer a possibility to clean up sites contaminated with heavy metals. Plants thus act as a solar driven pump, which can extract and concentrate heavy metals from the environment. Since most o ...
