The ability to drive the plasma potential in a magnetized plasma column using strongly negatively biased emissive cathode is experimentally demonstrated. By analysing an extensive experimental dataset, and in particular the evolution of the radial profiles ...

Safety climate assessment has become a regular practice for most organisations. However, it is often limited to questionnaires, providing only qualitative information. The indicator-based approach takes precedence over decision-making, and practical risk a ...

Risk management has become an essential element in the functioning of modern society. Correct risk identification and assessment are undoubtedly crucial to improving overall safety; nevertheless, often, it is accompanied by the wrong selection of correctiv ...

We analyze the quantum antiferromagnet on the maple leaf lattice in the presence of a magnetic field. Starting from its exact dimer ground state and for a magnetic field strength of the order of the local dimer spin-exchange coupling, we perform a strong-c ...

For decades transition-metal oxides have generated a huge interest due to the multitude of physical phenomena they exhibit. In this class of materials, the rare-earth nickelates, RNiO3, stand out for their rich phase diagram stemming from complex couplings ...

In this Letter we address the reentrance of magic-angle phenomena (band flatness and quantum-geometric transport) in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) subjected to strong magnetic fluxes +/-(1)0, +/- 200, +/- 3(p0 ... ((D0 = h/e is the flux quantum per moire ...

One of the grand challenges in interventional cardiology and neuroradiology is to minimize the operation time and risk of damage during catheterization. These two factors drastically increase if the target location resides in small and tortuous vessels. Fl ...

Implantable devices for localized and controlled drug release are important, e.g., for therapies of cancer and chronic pain. However, most of the existing active implants are limited by the usage of nonbiodegradable materials; thus, surgery is needed to ex ...

We develop a reduced model for hard-magnetic, thin, linear-elastic shells that can be actuated through an external magnetic field, with geometrically exact strain measures. Assuming a reduced kinematics based on the Kirchhoff-Love assumption, we derive a r ...

BaCuSi2O6 is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical appli ...

Thin beams made of magnetorheological elastomers embedded with hard-magnetic particles (hard-MREs) are capable of large deflections under an applied magnetic field. We propose a comprehensive framework, comprising a beam model and 3D finite element modelin ...

There is a need for a tool that facilitates safety decision-making in the academic environment. As this environment is very different from that of industry or other public sectors, there is no information available on the factors that influence the decisio ...

The absence of stray fields, their insensitivity to external magnetic fields, and ultrafast dynamics make antiferromagnets promising candidates for active elements in spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate manipulation of the Neel vector in the metallic ...

Technological advancement has been in cadence with material development by improving the purity of single crystals and, at the same time, controlling their imperfections. These capabilities have been especially vital for developing new technolo-gies based ...

The objective of this thesis is the development of high-field and high-current joints between Nb3Sn cables for superconducting coils. The main fields of application are high energy physics (HEP) and thermonuclear fusion. In this thesis, the focus is on Win ...

Research in nanoscience continues to bring forward a steady stream of new nanomaterials and processes that are being developed and marketed. While scientific committees and expert groups deal with the harmonization of terminology and legal challenges, risk ...

University chemical laboratories, contrary to common perception, are dangerous working environments. Unlike industry, where most processes are standardized, in academia, they are modified so frequently that in-depth and detailed risk assessment becomes unf ...

In several domains of physics, including first principle simulations and classical models for polarizable systems, the minimization of an energy function with respect to a set of auxiliary variables must be performed to define the dynamics of physical degr ...

We report a scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope in a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator with a base temperature at the sample stage of at least 30 mK. The microscope is rigidly mounted to the mixing chamber plate to opti ...

The effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation on life on Earth differ greatly. While overexposure to UV rays is harmful, small amounts of exposure are necessary for the synthesis of Vitamin D and good health. To optimize individual exposure to solar UV, ...
