This study presents a general approach to the topology design of tensegrities with rigid bodies. To the best of the authors' knowledge, all existing topology design methods of tensegrities focus on tensegrities that only consist of members carrying axial f ...

In this paper we introduce SD-WISE, a Software-Defined Wireless SEnsor networking solution for Wireless Sensor (and actuator) Networks (WSNs). SD-WISE has several unique features making it a flexible and expandable solution that can be applied in heterogen ...

DNA-protein interactions play an important role in all living organisms on Earth. The advent of atomic force microscopy permitted for the first time to follow and to characterize interaction forces between these two molecular species. After a short descrip ...

This paper summarizes the round-table discussion that was held during the European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE) in Nice, France, in October 2015 on this topic. The panellists come from different fields of chemical engineering and have thus broug ...

A series of tetranuclear arene ruthenium complexes of the general formula [Ru-4(p-cymene)(4)(mu(2)-L)(2)(mu(4)-OO boolean AND OO)(2)]CF3SO3 (L-1 = N,N'-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)-pyromellitic diimide, L-2 = N,N'-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)-naphthalene diimide) wer ...

Low-rank tensor approximation techniques attempt to mitigate the overwhelming complexity of linear algebra tasks arising from high-dimensional applications. In this work, we study the low-rank approximability of solutions to linear systems and eigenvalue p ...

The goal of the research described herein is the fabrication and assessment of electrically conductive partially-cured epoxy coatings which, upon cracking, autonomously restore barrier, mechanical and electrical properties via a microcapsule based healing ...

We consider the numerical solution of second order Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) on lower dimensional manifolds, specifically on surfaces in three dimensional spaces. For the spatial approximation, we consider Isogeometric Analysis which facilitate ...

Protein adsorption on biomedical CoCrMo alloys plays a crucial role in biocompatibility, corrosion and wear properties of implants. So far, protein adsorption was studied only on passive CoCrMo alloys above the open circuit potential. In this work the adso ...

The mechanical and damping properties of unidirectional (UD) and twill 2/2 flax fibre (FF) reinforced thermoset (epoxy) and thermoplastic (polypropylene (PP) and polylactic acid (PLA)) composites containing 40 vol% of fibres have been compared with those o ...

The controlled delivery of antibodies by immunoisolated bioimplants containing genetically engineered cells is an attractive and safe approach for chronic treatments. To reach therapeutic antibody levels there is a need to generate renewable cell lines, wh ...

In many cases, we can only have access to a service by proving we are sufficiently close to a particular location (e.g. in automobile or building access control). In these cases, proximity can be guaranteed through signal attenuation. However, by using add ...

Four branched tetra- and pentahydroxylated azepanes have been synthesized from a common azepane precursor through dihydroxylation followed by deoxygenation. They have been assayed as glycosidase inhibitors on a panel of 22 glycosidases and one methylated a ...

Nano -and microparticles have optical, structural, and chemical properties that differ from both their building blocks and the bulk materials themselves. These different physical and chemical properties are induced by the high surface-to-volume ratio. As a ...

An improved method for self-assembly fabrication of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) field effect transistors (FETs) is presented, combining the unique design of biased/floating potential electrode geometry and the technique of aligning CNTs by pre-de ...
