Hydrogen clathrate hydrates are ice-like crystalline substances in which hydrogen molecules are trapped inside polyhedral cages formed by the water molecules. Small cages can host only a single H-2 molecule, while each large cage can be occupied by up to f ...

We report the development of a continuous-wave and pulsed X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer for the study of spins on ordered surfaces down to cryogenic temperatures. The spectrometer operates in ultra-high vacuum and utilizes a half-wavele ...

We report on a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study on a single crystal of a nonstoichiometric pyrochlore iridate Tb2+xIr2-xO7-y (x≃0.25) that magnetically orders at TN≃50 K. We observe a propagating gapped magnon mode at low energy and model it using ...

Aqueous interfaces are omnipresent in nature. Nonlinear optical methods such as second harmonic and sum frequency generation (SHG/SFG) are valuable techniques to access molecular level information from these interfaces. In the interpretation of SHG and SFG ...

The effects of tagging protonated glycine with either He or with between 1 and 14 H2 molecules on the infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectra and the ion structure was investigated. Differences in the IR spectra with either a single He atom or H2 molecul ...

A few months before the COVID-19 pandemic, Pierre Vogel and Kendall N. Houk published with a new textbook Wiley-VCH, "Organic Chemistry: Theory, Reactivity, and Mechanisms in Modern Synthesis", with a foreword from the late Roberts H. Grubbs. The book demo ...

Spatially resolved studies of crystalline structures, e.g. lattice spacings, are enabled by recording the transmitted spectra in neutron Bragg edge imaging. The recorded signals are, however, a result of through-thickness averaging of the probed specimen i ...

Recent advancement in quantitative liquid-jet photoelectron spectroscopy enables the accurate determination of the absolute-scale electronic energetics of liquids and species in solution. The major objective of the present work is the determination of the ...

After decades of research on non-invasive glucose monitoring, invasive devices based on finger blood sampling are still the predominant reference for diabetic patients for accurately measuring blood glucose levels. Meanwhile, research continues improving p ...

The microstructural evolution of the two austenitic alloys Fe-20Mn-3Al-0.7C wt pct and Fe-20Mn-6Al-0.7C wt pct when different thermal and thermomechanical treatments are performed has been studied. To this end, a generic industrial die of 100 ton capacity ...

Machine learning (ML) algorithms have undergone an explosive development impacting every aspect of computational chemistry. To obtain reliable predictions, one needs to maintain a proper balance between the black-box nature of ML frameworks and the physics ...

Closed-shell atoms scattered from a metal surface exchange energy and momentum with surface phonons mostly via the interposed surface valence electrons, i.e., via the creation of virtual electron-hole pairs. The latter can then decay into surface phonons v ...

We present a(1)H NMR investigation of spin dynamics in two finite integer spin molecular nanomagnetic rings, namely V7Zn and V7Ni. This study could be put in correlation with the problem of Haldane gap in infinite integer spin chains. While V7Zn is an appr ...

Recent work has shown that the properties of multiple populations (MPs) within massive stellar clusters (i.e. in the extent of their abundance variations as well as the fraction of stars that show the anomalous chemistry) depend on the mass as well as the ...

Today's great challenges of energy and informational technologies are addressed with a singular compound, Li-and Na-doped few-layer graphene. All that is impossible for graphite (homogeneous and high-level Na doping) and unstable for single-layer graphene ...

Among the prerequisites for the progress of single-molecule-based electronic devices are a better understanding of the electronic properties at the individual molecular level and the development of methods to tune the charge transport through molecular jun ...

Photoswitching of a charged azobenzene-stilbene dye is investigated through laser excitation in a tandem ion mobility mass spectrometer. Action spectra associated with E -> Z and Z -> E photoisomerisation of the stilbene group exhibit bands at 685 and 440 ...

The Beyond Ultra-deep Frontier Fields and Legacy Observations (BUFFALO) is a 101 orbit + 101 parallel Cycle 25 Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury program taking data from 2018 to 2020. BUFFALO will expand existing coverage of the Hubble Frontier Fields ...

Photon statistics is a powerful tool for characterizing the emission dynamics of nanoscopic systems and their photophysics. Recent advances that combine correlation spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence (STML) have allowed th ...

We present an extensive study of the quantum dynamics of molecular hydrogen trapped within the nanocavities of two hydrate structures at low temperatures, namely, clathrate structure II and filled ice structure Cl. By inelastic neutron scattering measureme ...
