In order to prepare the operation of ITER, it is important to estimate the amplitude of the runaway electron (RE) current that could appear following disruptions at large plasma currents. Theoretically, the avalanche gain of RE population on a toroidal flu ...

This paper investigates the presence of OCR-sensitive neurons within the Transformer architecture and their influence on named entity recognition (NER) performance on historical documents. By analysing neuron activation patterns in response to clean and no ...

Linear gyrokinetic (GK) simulations using the Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code (GTC) [Lin et al., "Turbulent transport reduction by zonal flows: Massively parallel simulations," Science 281, 1835-1837 (1998)] have been performed to investigate Toroidicity-driven ...

The image compression field is witnessing a shift in paradigm thanks to the rise of neural network-based models. In this context, the JPEG committee is in the process of standardizing the first learning-based image compression standard, known as JPEG AI. W ...

Metabolic changes precede malignant histology. However, it remains unclear whether detectable characteristic metabolome exists in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and biofluids for early diagnosis. Here, we conduct NMR- and MS-based metabo ...

FCC-ee performance is challenged by magnetic errors and imperfections. Magnetic design simulations predict a systematic quadrupolar component in the arc dipoles significantly impacting the machine optics. This paper studies the impact of this component in ...

An Electron Cyclotron (EC) Heating and Current Drive (HCD) system will be installed in the EU DEMO Tokamak to provide plasma heating and stabilization by coupling up to 130 MW of mm-wave power into specific regions of the plasma. The mm -waves will be gene ...

BackgroundLower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are among the most frequent infections and a significant contributor to inappropriate antibiotic prescription. Currently, no single diagnostic tool can reliably identify bacterial pneumonia. We thus eval ...

JET, the world's largest operating tokamak with unique Be/W wall and tritium handling capability, completed a Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) campaign in 2021 (Maggi et al 29th Fusion Energy Conf.) following a decade of preparatory experiments, dedicated enhanceme ...

In this doctoral thesis, a promising technique has been used for the measurement of non-thermal electrons in TCV. The technique employs a Vertical viewing ECE to more easily discriminate the radiation according to the energy of the electrons. Successful ...

We propose two deep learning models that fully automate shape parameterization for aerodynamic shape optimization. Both models are optimized to parameterize via deep geometric learning to embed human prior knowledge into learned geometric patterns, elimina ...

We study aspects of chaos and thermodynamics at strong coupling in a scalar model using LCT numerical methods. We find that our eigenstate spectrum satisfies Wigner-Dyson statistics and that the coefficients describing eigenstates in our basis satisfy Rand ...

Black phosphorus (BP) stands out among two-dimensional(2D) semiconductorsbecause of its high mobility and thickness dependent direct band gap. However, the quasiparticle band structure of ultrathin BP has remainedinaccessible to experiment thus far. Here we ...

The success of self-supervised learning in computer vision and natural language processing has motivated pretraining methods on tabular data. However, most existing tabular self-supervised learning models fail to leverage information across multiple data t ...

Filaments are elongated structures that connect groups and clusters of galaxies and are visually the striking feature in cosmological maps. In the literature, typically filaments are defined only using galaxies, assuming that these are good tracers of the ...

DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with funda ...

Learning how to reach a reward over long series of actions is a remarkable capability of humans, and potentially guided by multiple parallel learning modules. Current brain imaging of learning modules is limited by (i) simple experimental paradigms, (ii) e ...

The defective regimes in metal-based Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) processes can be minimized by deploying in-situ monitoring strategies comprising Machine learning (ML) algorithms and sensing techniques. So far, algorithms trained for monitoring a partic ...

We present a study of the linear properties of the ion-temperature gradient (ITG) modes with collisions modelled for the first time by the linearized gyrokinetic (GK) Coulomb collision operator (Frei et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 87, issue 5, 2021, 9058705 ...

Aging civil infrastructures are closely monitored by engineers for damage and critical defects. As the manual inspection of such large structures is costly and time-consuming, we are working towards fully automating the visual inspections to support the pr ...
