This work examines the crack-arresting capability of PEI and PVDF thermoplastic interlayers in short-glass fiber modified and core-shell rubber toughened epoxy materials under mode-I fracture loading. Experimental results show that the initial crack can be ...

Data-driven control approaches for the minimization of energy consumption of buildings have the potential to significantly reduce deployment costs and increase the uptake of advanced control in this sector. A number of recent approaches based on the applic ...

Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is a promising technology to convert wet biomass to renewable natural gas. The present study sheds light on the chemical composition and the formation mechanism of coke deposits on a Ru/CNF catalyst during continuous ...

Reuse of reinforced concrete (RC) components reduces construction’s environmental impacts and waste. Rather than crushing the concrete of an obsolete structure, its components are saw cut and later reassembled in a new structure. The theoretical feasibilit ...

Although cold-formed steel (CFS) framing systems have the potential to support the need for resilient housing, the use of CFS has been restricted due to gaps in understanding its structural behavior and by the limited guidelines provided in design standard ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) was used to consolidate powders of a Ni-Cr-Fe-Mo alloy (Hastelloy X) blended with 1 wt% Y2O3 nanometric powders. The nearly-dense, crack-free specimens, with and without oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS), exhibit high-aspe ...

The defective regimes in metal-based Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) processes can be minimized by deploying in-situ monitoring strategies comprising Machine learning (ML) algorithms and sensing techniques. So far, algorithms trained for monitoring a partic ...

In the framework of the XFLEX HYDRO H2020 European Project, one of the demonstrators focuses on the implementation of the hydraulic short-circuit on the pump storage power plant of Grand-Maison owned by Electricite De France (EDF). The Grand-Maison power p ...

The Washington Accord emphasises the role of ethical and societal considerations in the practice of engineering. Increasingly, national accrediting bodies are also expecting to see evidence in the delivery and assessment of ethics throughout engineering pr ...

This paper presents results from an experimental evaluation on the pre- and post-buckling behavior of 12 steel wide-flange cantilever columns under axial load and lateral drift demands. The influence of several loading and geometric parameters, including t ...

Herringbone-grooved journal bearings (HGJBs) for high-speed turbo-machinery are often supported on O-rings due to their favorable stiffness and damping characteristics for stability and alignment reasons. They yield limited lifetime at high temperatures, i ...

This work reports on the tribocorrosion properties of a CoCrMo alloy sliding under imposed passive potential against alumina in sulfuric acid-glycerol mixtures exhibiting different viscosities and thus, in principle, lubrication properties. As expected, we ...

Recently, parametric mappings have emerged as highly effective surface representations, yielding low reconstruction error. In particular, the latest works represent the target shape as an atlas of multiple mappings, which can closely encode object parts. A ...

‘Structural UHPFRC’ stands for Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite material, that is, complemented by reinforcing steel bars forming a R-UHPFRC layer with the goal to enhance the resistance and durability of structural elements i ...

Learning-based algorithms have gained great popularity in communications since they often outperform even carefully engineered solutions by learning from training samples. In this paper, we show that the selection of appropriate training examples can be im ...

Personality is one of the most important factors in human interactions, which retains its importance in human robot interactions with social robots. This work focusses on the varied linguistic strategies which characterize the personality traits of extrave ...
