Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have gained significant attentions for their inherent safety and cost-effectiveness. However, challenges, such as dendrite growth and anodic corrosion at the Zn anode, hinder their commercial viability. In this paper, an ...

The corrosion mechanisms of a Roman iron bezel ring were investigated by in-depth characterization of its uncommon corrosion pattern and thermodynamic modelling. A silver foil and altered glass remnants were identified, covered with thick strata of magneti ...

This research presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of the passivation kinetics of OFP-Cu and OF-Cu in simulated repository electrolyte. The study employs a range of techniques, including potentiodynamic polarization, multi-step potentiostatic pola ...

This Thesis provides a comprehensive and correlative investigation of the microstructure, chemical state, and electrochemical reactivity of manganese oxide (MnOx) films, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the deposition and dissolution mechanism of M ...

With the development of modern medical techniques, the application of orthopedic implants has been continually increasing in recent years. Passive materials, such as Ti and its alloys as well as CoCrMo alloys, are widely used in artificial joints due to th ...

Sterilization is a prerequisite for biomedical devices before contacting the human body. It guarantees the lack of infection by eliminating microorganisms (i.e., bacteria, spores and fungi). It constitutes the last fabrication process of a biomedical devic ...

Modular hip joint implants were introduced in arthroplasty medical procedures because they facilitate the tailoring of patients’ anatomy, the use of different materials in one single configuration, as well as medical revision. However, in certain cases, su ...

Zinc metal batteries are strongly hindered by water corrosion, as solvated zinc ions would bring the active water molecules to the electrode/electrolyte interface constantly. Herein, we report a sacrificial solvation shell to repel active water molecules f ...

A large number of aging road and railway riveted metallic bridges suffer from fatigue problems. Stringer-to-floor-beam double-angle bridge connections are among the most fatigue-prone details due to the many cyclic distortion-induced stresses from axle loa ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

Ni-P electroless coatings are widely applied for protection of magnesium alloys and other materials due to the low energy consumption of the process and high resistance to corrosion and wear, properties that can be improved with the incorporation of partic ...

Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is a cementitious composite material where a carbon or glass fabric is embedded as reinforcement. The use of TRC allows building thin and light structures, with reduced concrete covers and an enhanced durability due to the ...

Residual stresses in hot-rolled wide flange steel cross sections may lead to premature yielding, accelerated corrosion and brittle fracture of steel members. The above phenomena lead to a loss of a steel member's stiffness and resistance under mechanical l ...

Plasma nitriding was applied to ferritic stainless steel substrates to improve their performances as interconnects for solid oxide fuel cell devices. The samples underwent electrical conductivity test and SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS, environmental-SEM analyses. The f ...

The electrodeposition (ED) of stainless steel (SS) -like FeCrNi alloys for miniaturised devices is appealing for bio-medicine as it would allow combining excellent material properties (e.g. corrosion resistance, hardness, bio-compatibility) at low-cost. Ho ...

Tribocorrosion, as the interaction between mechanical wear and electrochemical corrosion, has been found to be the main problem causing the failure and limiting the lifetime of metal-on-metal artificial hip joints. Better understanding of the tribocorrosio ...

Carbonaceous nanocoatings such as diamond-like amorphous carbon or graphene layers exhibit remarkable properties in multiple fields, ranging from corrosion protection to electronics and lubrication. However, they are typically deposited from the vapor phas ...

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings can improve the wear resistance of articulating implants. However despite successful in-vitro testing, some DLC coated joint replacements had to be revised prematurely, mainly due to coating delamination induced by corros ...

Magnesium exhibits a high potential for a variety of applications in areas such as transport, energy and medicine. However, untreated magnesium alloys are prone to corrosion, restricting their practical application. Therefore, it is necessary to develop ne ...

In Switzerland, the Opalinus Clay formation is considered the most likely host rock for a deep geological repository for nuclear waste. In deep geological repositories, H2 is expected to be the most abundant gas formed from the degradation of waste and fro ...
