This work examines the crack-arresting capability of PEI and PVDF thermoplastic interlayers in short-glass fiber modified and core-shell rubber toughened epoxy materials under mode-I fracture loading. Experimental results show that the initial crack can be ...

Hydraulic fractures are used to enhance the hydrocarbon production from low permeability rocks and to measure the minimum in-situ principal stress in rock formations. In these cases, the fracture growth above (or below) the formation of interest is a key m ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a powder-based additive manufacturing (AM) technique, which shows great potential in the production of complex-shaped parts with unprecedented design freedom. In addition, it allows for an active manipulation of the micros ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are a type of soft actuators, generating mechanical displacement when an electric stimulation is applied. DEAs can be described as compliant capacitors, and when a voltage is applied, a compressive Maxwell stress will ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) was used to consolidate powders of a Ni-Cr-Fe-Mo alloy (Hastelloy X) blended with 1 wt% Y2O3 nanometric powders. The nearly-dense, crack-free specimens, with and without oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS), exhibit high-aspe ...

Spatially resolved studies of crystalline structures, e.g. lattice spacings, are enabled by recording the transmitted spectra in neutron Bragg edge imaging. The recorded signals are, however, a result of through-thickness averaging of the probed specimen i ...

Fatigue of structural adhesives has been investigated through joints and a little number of works investigate bulk adhesive behaviour itself. Aerospace and automotive engineering focuses more on joint configuration studies, which are correlated with practi ...

The microstructural evolution of the two austenitic alloys Fe-20Mn-3Al-0.7C wt pct and Fe-20Mn-6Al-0.7C wt pct when different thermal and thermomechanical treatments are performed has been studied. To this end, a generic industrial die of 100 ton capacity ...

Dry-snow slab avalanches result from crack propagation in a highly porous weak layer buried within a stratified and metastable snowpack. While our understanding of slab avalanche mechanisms improved with recent experimental and numerical advances, fundamen ...

In central Europe, many geo-energy reservoirs have revealed to be hosted in transverse isotropic crystalline rock, where the rock's mechanical and hydraulic transport properties are poorly constrained. Here, we performed triaxial experiments on Cresciano G ...

This paper presents results from an experimental evaluation on the pre- and post-buckling behavior of 12 steel wide-flange cantilever columns under axial load and lateral drift demands. The influence of several loading and geometric parameters, including t ...

Sustained load actions are permanently present in concrete structures, as for example self-weight and dead loads on bridges or soil pressure on cut-and-cover tunnels. These actions may increase throughout a structure's lifetime, for instance after refurbis ...

A new numerically-based method suitable for determining the total strain energy release rate (SERA) involved in two-dimensional (2D) Mode I-dominated delamination under opening loads in FRP laminates is presented. The method is based on the mutual dependen ...
