This paper investigates the presence of OCR-sensitive neurons within the Transformer architecture and their influence on named entity recognition (NER) performance on historical documents. By analysing neuron activation patterns in response to clean and no ...

The ability to reason, plan and solve highly abstract problems is a hallmark of human intelligence. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, propelled by deep neural networks, have revolutionized disciplines like computer vision and natural language ...

This paper examines how the European press dealt with the no-vax reactions against the Covid-19 vaccine and the dis- and misinformation associated with this movement. Using a curated dataset of 1786 articles from 19 European newspapers on the anti-vaccine ...

IntroductionThis study presents COVID-Twitter-BERT (CT-BERT), a transformer-based model that is pre-trained on a large corpus of COVID-19 related Twitter messages. CT-BERT is specifically designed to be used on COVID-19 content, particularly from social me ...

This paper introduces TACOSS a text-image alignment approach that allows explainable land cover semantic segmentation by directly integrating semantic concepts encoded from texts. TACOSS combines convolutional neural networks for visual feature extraction ...

Investigating the intangible nature of a cultural domain can take multiple forms, addressing for example the aesthetic, epistemic and social dimensions of its phenomenology. The context of Southern Chinese martial arts is of particular significance as it c ...

Graphs processing has become an important part of various areas of computing, including machine learning, medical applications, social network analysis, computational sciences, and others. A growing amount of the associated graph processing workloads are d ...

Named entity linking (NEL) in news is a challenging endeavour due to the frequency of unseen and emerging entities, which necessitates the use of unsupervised or zero-shot methods. However, such methods tend to come with caveats, such as no integration of ...

HIPE-2022 datasets used for the HIPE 2022 shared task on named entity recognition and classification (NERC) and entity linking (EL) in multilingual historical documents. HIPE-2022 datasets are based on six primary datasets assembled and prepared for the sh ...

The paper describes the submission of the team "We used bert!" to the shared task Gendered Pronoun Resolution (Pair pronouns to their correct entities). Our final submission model based on the fine-tuned BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Tra ...

Object-centric learning has gained significant attention over the last years as it can serve as a powerful tool to analyze complex scenes as a composition of simpler entities. Well-established tasks in computer vision, such as object detection or instance ...

Defining and identifying duplicate records in a dataset is a challenging task which grows more complex when the modeled entities themselves are hard to delineate. In the geospatial domain, it may not be clear where a mountain, stream, or valley ends and be ...

Modular robots (MRs) consist of unique robots which interconnect and work as a collective to perform objectives. Coordinating these robots rely on robust communication, as modules moving independently can lead to damaging behaviour. We present a robust str ...

In this paper, we propose a new approach to learn multimodal multilingual embeddings for matching images and their relevant captions in two languages. We combine two existing objective functions to make images and captions close in a joint embedding space ...

Keyphrase extraction is the task of automatically selecting a small set of phrases that best describe a given free text document. Keyphrases can be used for indexing, searching, aggregating and summarizing text documents, serving many automatic as well as ...

Different senses of source words must often be rendered by different words in the target language when performing machine translation (MT). Selecting the correct translation of polysemous words can be done based on the contexts of use. However, state-of-th ...

Machine-readable semantic knowledge in the form of taxonomies (i.e., a collection of is-a edges) has proved to be beneficial in an array of NLP tasks including inference, textual entailment, question answering and information extraction. Such widespread ut ...

We present an automatic method for trend detection in job ads. From a job-posting website, we collect job ads from 16 countries and in 8 languages and 6 job domains. We pre-process them by removing stop words, lemmatising and performing cross-domain filter ...

Machine Translation (MT) has made considerable progress in the past two decades, particularly after the introduction of neural network models (NMT). During this time, the research community has mostly focused on modeling and evaluating MT systems at the se ...

We present a method for making neural network predictions robust to shifts from the training data distribution. The proposed method is based on making predictions via a diverse set of cues (called 'middle domains') and ensembling them into one strong predi ...
