In order to prepare the operation of ITER, it is important to estimate the amplitude of the runaway electron (RE) current that could appear following disruptions at large plasma currents. Theoretically, the avalanche gain of RE population on a toroidal flu ...

An Electron Cyclotron (EC) Heating and Current Drive (HCD) system will be installed in the EU DEMO Tokamak to provide plasma heating and stabilization by coupling up to 130 MW of mm-wave power into specific regions of the plasma. The mm -waves will be gene ...

Linear gyrokinetic (GK) simulations using the Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code (GTC) [Lin et al., "Turbulent transport reduction by zonal flows: Massively parallel simulations," Science 281, 1835-1837 (1998)] have been performed to investigate Toroidicity-driven ...

Cross-field transport of particles in the boundary region of magnetically confined fusion plasmas is dominated by turbulence. Blobs, intermittent turbulent structures with large amplitude and a filamentary shape appearing in the scrape-off layer (SOL), are ...

In this doctoral thesis, a promising technique has been used for the measurement of non-thermal electrons in TCV. The technique employs a Vertical viewing ECE to more easily discriminate the radiation according to the energy of the electrons. Successful ...

Negative hydrogen ion (H-) sources employed in neutral beam injection (NBI) systems are subject to extraction efficiency issues due to the considerable volumetric losses of negative hydrogen ions. Here, we propose to improve the H- extraction by activating ...

DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with funda ...

We present a study of the linear properties of the ion-temperature gradient (ITG) modes with collisions modelled for the first time by the linearized gyrokinetic (GK) Coulomb collision operator (Frei et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 87, issue 5, 2021, 9058705 ...

The interaction between neutral particles and the plasma plays a key role in determining the dynamics of the tokamak boundary that, in turn, significantly impact the overall performance of the device. Leveraging the work in Wersal and Ricci [Nucl. Fusion 5 ...

Variability of the rotor aspect ratio is one of the inherent characteristics of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) which differentiates them especially from the more conventional horizontal-axis wind turbines. In this study, we intend to investigate the e ...

An extension of the SolEdge2D-EIRENE code package, named D-WEE, has been developed to add the dynamics of thermal desorption of hydrogen isotopes from the surface of plasma facing materials. To achieve this purpose, D-WEE models hydrogen isotopes implantat ...

Snow is one of the most complex materials occurring in nature. In clouds, it can be seen either as a crystal with various shapes or as a freshwater resource that will fall down to the Earth's surface. Once on the ground, it can be described as a thermodyna ...

Fast ions in W7-X will be produced either by neutral beam injection (NBI) or by ion-cyclotron resonant heating (ICRH). The latter presents the advantage of depositing power locally and does not suffer from core accessibility issues (Drevlak et al 2014 Nucl ...

Controlled nuclear fusion could provide our society with a clean, safe, and virtually inexhaustible source of electric power production. The tokamak has proven to be capable of producing large amounts of fusion reactions by confining magnetically the ...

As a simple alternative to the standard eddy-diffusivity closure, a nonlinear subgrid-scale (SGS) flux model is introduced and implemented in simulations of a neutral atmospheric boundary layer and a stable atmospheric boundary layer. The new model compute ...
