Fiber endoscopy plays an important role in the clinical diagnosis and treatment processes involved in modern medicine. Thin fiber probes can relay information from confined places in the human body that are inaccessible for conventional bulky microscopes. ...

A laboratory study was undertaken to investigate how changes in flow regime and hydrograph shape (number of cycled hydrographs and duration of each hydrograph) together impact bedload transport and resulting bed morphology. Three hydrologic conditions (exp ...

Stretchable optical and electronic fibers constitute increasingly important building blocks for a myriad of applications, particularly in robotics, soft prosthesis, surgical tools and implants, and smart medical textiles. The integration of multi-material ...

The ability to integrate complex electronic and optoelectronic functionalities within soft and thin fibers is one of today's key advanced manufacturing challenges. Multifunctional and connected fiber devices will be at the heart of the development of smart ...

Fiber-based devices with advanced functionalities are emerging as promising solutions for various applications in flexible electronics and bioengineering. Multimaterial thermal drawing, in particular, has attracted strong interest for its ability to genera ...

Although distributed fiber-optic sensing of axial strain and temperature is a well-established technique, there are almost no demonstrations of distributed hydrostatic pressure sensing. The main obstacle for such measurements is the low sensitivity to pres ...

When transported in confined geometries rigid fibers show interesting transport dynamics induced by friction with the top and bottom walls. Fiber flexibility causes an additional coupling between fiber deformation and transport and is expected to lead to m ...

The preform-to-fiber thermal drawing process has been recently proposed for the fabrication of fibers and microchannels with submicrometer surface textures. To better control the final architecture and reach small feature size down to tens of nanometers ho ...

The thermal drawing of a uniform capillary-like fiber that integrates an encapsulated microchannel and an embedded capacitor system within a polymeric cladding is demonstrated. Such a fiber construct has versatile functionalities applicable to microfluidic ...

Combining the sol-gel method for fiber material production with the granulated silica method for preform assembly results in a robust method that offers a high degree of freedom regarding both the composition and the geometry of the produced fiber. Using t ...
