Order, regularities, and patterns are ubiquitous around us. A flock of birds maneuvering in the sky, the self-organization of social insects, a global pandemic or a traffic jam are examples of complex systems where the macroscopic patterns arise from the m ...

Our dataset consists of very high-resolution aerial images (50cm) and a digital elevation model (50cm) that covers approx. 2300 km2 of land above 2000m altitude in the southwestern part of Switzerland. Our land cover labels focus on alpine land cover that ...

Aerial robot swarms can have a large socio-economic impact. They can perform time-critical missions faster than a single robot and access dangerous environments without compromising human safety. However, swarm deployment is often limited to free environme ...

Aerial robot swarms have the potential to perform time-critical and dangerous tasks such as disaster response without compromising human safety. However, their reliance on external infrastructure such as global positioning for localization and wireless net ...

Recent works in aerial robotics show that the self-organized and cohesive flight of swarms can emerge from the exchange of purely local information between neighboring agents. However, most of the current swarm models are not capable of flight in densely c ...

Gait emergence and adaptation in animals is unmatched in robotic systems. Animals can create and recover locomotive functions "on-the-fly" after an injury whereas locomotion controllers for robots lack robustness to morphological changes. In this work, we ...

The interest in multi-drone systems flourished in the last decade and their application is promising in many fields. We believe that in order to make drone swarms flying smoothly and reliably in real-world scenarios we need a first intermediate step which ...

This paper presents a strategy for providing reliable state estimates that allow a group of robots to realize a formation even when communication fails and the tracking data alone is insufficient for maintaining a stable formation. Furthermore, the trackin ...

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are becoming increasingly popular for a broad variety of tasks ranging from aerial imagery to objects delivery. With the expansion of the areas, where drones can be efficiently used, the collision risk with other flying objects inc ...

In the last decade, drones became frequently used to provide eye-in-the-sky overview in the outdoor environment. Their main advantage compared to the other types of robots is that they can fly above obstacles and rough terrains and they can quickly cover l ...

This paper reports experimental results on self-organizing wireless networks carried by small flying robots. Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) composed of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are flexible, inexpensive and fast to deploy. This makes them a v ...

Population-based learning techniques have been proven to be effective in dealing with noise in numerical benchmark functions and are thus promising tools for the high-dimensional optimization of controllers for multiple robots with limited sensing capabili ...

In this paper, we present a distributed control strategy, enabling agents to converge onto and travel along a consensually selected curve among a class of closed planar curves. Individual agents identify the number of neighbors within a finite circular sen ...

A major challenge in swarm robotics is efficiently deploying robots into unknown environments, minimising energy and time costs. This is especially important with small aerial robots which have extremely limited flight autonomy. This paper compares three d ...

Swarms of flying robots are promising in many applications due to rapid terrain coverage. However, there are numerous challenges in realising autonomous operation in unknown indoor environments. A new autonomous flight methodology is presented using relati ...

This paper will introduce the goals, concept and results of the project named CLOSE-SEARCH, which stands for ’Accurate and safe EGNOS-SoL Navigation for UAV-based low-cost Search-And-Rescue (SAR) operations’. The main goal is to integrate a medium-size, he ...

One of the key innovations during the evolution of life on earth has been the emergence of efficient communication systems, yet little is known about the causes and consequences of the great diversity within and between species. By conducting experimental ...

Ultra-Wideband Impulse Radio (UWB-IR) is a technology that has great potential to solve numerous mobile robotic and asset tracking problems in GPS-denied environments. Our goal is to help software and hardware designers in improving the state-of-the-art in ...

For many real-life applications such as monitoring, mapping, search-and-rescue or ad-hoc communication networks, fleets of flying robots are expected to out-perform existing solutions. Robots can join forces to cover larger areas in less time, act as effic ...

The success of swarm behaviors often depends on the range at which robots can communicate and the speed at which they change their behavior. Challenges arise when the communication range is too small with respect to the dynamics of the robot, preventing in ...
