Time-domain solutions of Maxwell’s equations in homogeneous and isotropic media are paramount to studying transient or broadband phenomena. However, analytical solutions are generally unavailable for practical applications, while numerical solutions are co ...

For a high-dimensional problem, a randomized Gram-Schmidt (RGS) algorithm is beneficial in terms of both computational cost and numerical stability. We apply this dimension reduction technique by random sketching to Krylov subspace methods, e.g., to the ge ...

Drifting and blowing snow are important features in polar and high mountain regions. They control the surface mass balance in windy conditions and influence sublimation of snow and ice surfaces. Despite their importance, model representations in weather an ...

This work is concerned with the computation of the action of a matrix function f(A), such as the matrix exponential or the matrix square root, on a vector b. For a general matrix A, this can be done by computing the compression of A onto a suitable Krylov ...

The Modular Multiplatform Compatible Air Measurement System (MoMuCAMS) is a newly developed in situ aerosol and trace gas measurement platform for lower-atmospheric vertical profiling. MoMuCAMS has been primarily designed to be attached to a Helikite, a ru ...

Context. Gaia DR3 has offered the scientific community a remarkable dataset of approximately one million spectra acquired with the radial velocity spectrometer (RVS) in the calcium II triplet region, which is well suited to identify very metal-poor (VMP) s ...

In this thesis we will present and analyze randomized algorithms for numerical linear algebra problems. An important theme in this thesis is randomized low-rank approximation. In particular, we will study randomized low-rank approximation of matrix functio ...

The shapes of galaxies, their outer regions in particular, are important guideposts to their formation and evolution. In this work, we report on the discovery of strongly box-shaped morphologies of the otherwise well-studied elliptical and lenticular galax ...

We present a numerical model for the approximation of multiphase flows with free surfaces and strong interfacial effects. The model relies on the multiphase incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and includes surface tension effects on the interfaces betw ...

This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

Cross-field transport of particles in the boundary region of magnetically confined fusion plasmas is dominated by turbulence. Blobs, intermittent turbulent structures with large amplitude and a filamentary shape appearing in the scrape-off layer (SOL), are ...

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow with the actuator disc (AD) for turbine modelling is a widely used method of simulating wind farm flows. Hence, it is important to understand the requirements for achieving a good compar ...

Sublimation influences the water storage in snow covers and glaciers, which is important for water use and projections of the sea level rise. Yet, it is challenging to quantify sublimation for large areas or in conditions of snow transport. In-situ measure ...

Large eddy simulations of tip vortex cavitation (TVC) around an elliptical hydrofoil is performed to study its scale effect. A satisfying agreement is obtained between the numerical and experimental data. It indicates that the scale effect of TVC is remark ...

In this paper, transient granular flows are examined both numerically and experimentally. Simulations are performed using the continuous three-dimensional (3-D) granular model introduced in Daviet & Bertails-Descoubes (ACM Trans. Graph., vol. 35, no. 4, 20 ...

A search for the rare eta -> mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) double-Dalitz decay is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with high-rate muon triggers during 2017 and 2018 and corresponding to an integra ...

Dry deposition to the surface is one of the main removal pathways of tropospheric ozone (O3). We quantified for the first time the impact of O3 deposition to the Arctic sea ice on the planetary boundary layer (PBL) O3 concentration and budget using year-ro ...

The Modular Multiplatform Compatible Air Measurement System (MoMuCAMS) is a newly developed in situ aerosol and trace gas measurement payload for lower atmospheric vertical profiling in extreme environments. MoMuCAMS is a multiplatform compatible system, p ...

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) training can be difficult due to vanishing and exploding gradients during weight optimization through backpropagation. To address this problem, we propose a general class of Hamiltonian DNNs (H-DNNs) that stem from the discretiz ...

The first generation of S-band injectors for free-electron lasers has illustrated high reliability and performance by driving the latest generation of high brightness machines. However, the ultimate electron beam brightness of these devices is limited by t ...
