Developing effective 360-degree (spherical) image compression techniques is crucial for technologies like virtual reality and automated driving. This paper advances the state-of-the-art in on-the-sphere learning (OSLO) for omnidirectional image compression ...

Over-reliance on the automation of transportation systems is understood to be the cause of new types of accidents. In this paper, the automated driving system is augmented with control methods enabling driver intervention without its full deactivation. The ...

The interactions with touchscreens rely heavily on vision: The virtual buttons and virtual sliders on a touchscreen provide no mechanical sense of the object they seek to represent. This work presents PopTouch: a 500 mu m thick flexible haptic display that ...

The current study sought to objectively evaluate cybersickness by utilizing Electrogastrogram (EGG) physiological data in relation to three different navigation axes: Translational movement along the longitudinal and lateral axes, and rotation along the ve ...

Teleoperators rely on both visual and haptic feedback to perform drone teleoperation tasks, such as obstacle avoidance. Haptic feedback becomes essential when visual feedback is compromised, either due to visual occlusions or poor depth perception. However ...

The control of collective robotic systems, such as drone swarms, is often delegated to autonomous navigation algorithms due to their high dimensionality. However, like other robotic entities, drone swarms can still benefit from being teleoperated by human ...

Robotic systems are becoming more and more pervasive in modern industrial, scientific and personal activities through recent years and will play a fundamental role in the future society. Despite their increasing level of automation, teleoperation is still ...

We have recently released in the open domain data originating from a series of flights conducted with a fixed-wing micro UAV carrying high-quality small camera and navigation sensors. This data was previously used in several peer-reviewed publications. How ...

The popularity of delivery drones is constantly increasing due to their ability to deliver packages more rapidly and economically than current transportation methods. Consequently, drones have been employed by logistics companies for delivering payloads to ...

The use of robots in search and rescue is gaining particular interest, but singular skills are required to ensure efficient deployments in real missions. To face this problem, there is a need to develop more intuitive control interfaces. Moreover, to ensur ...

The concept of adaptivity is crucial in enterprise software systems with a large user base. Adaptive user interfaces (AUI) is an emerging research area that enables customized user experience based on user activities. Most of the existing studies that are ...

Recent advances in hardware and software technologies have given rise to a new class of human-computer interfaces that both explores multiple modalities and allows for multiple collaborating users. When compared to the development of traditional single-use ...

Robotic teleoperation is fundamental to augment the resilience, precision, and force of robots with the cognition of the operator. However, current interfaces, such as joysticks and remote controllers, are often complicated to handle since they require cog ...

Virtual reality (VR), the interactive experience of being immersed in a simulated environment, has seen a tremendous development in the last years. Numerous applications came into being, ranging from flight simulators through a virtual ascent of Mount Ever ...

Situational awareness by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is important for many applications such as surveillance, search and rescue, and disaster response. In those applications, detecting and locating people and recognizing their actions in near real-time ...

Most human-robot interfaces, such as joysticks and keyboards, require training and constant cognitive effort and provide a limited degree of awareness of the robots’ state and its environment. Embodied interactions, that is the bidirectional link between t ...

Roombots (RB) are self-reconfigurable modular robots designed to explore physical structure change by robotic reconfiguration and adaptive locomotion on structured grid environment or unstructured environment. The primary goal of RB is to create adaptive f ...

This article presents a comparison of the effects of input-output location (co-located versus discrete) on user performance in a tangible user interface (TUI) system. We conducted a mobile eye-tracking study with two different versions of a TUI system and, ...

In this paper, we propose a gesture-based interface designed to interact with panoramic scenes. The system combines novel static gestures with a fast hand tracking method. Our proposal is to use static gestures as shortcuts to activate functionalities of t ...
