Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have raised interest due to their remarkable capabilities in various applications, such as soft robotics, haptic feedback systems, and biomedical devices. To harness the full potential of DEAs, the choice of the electr ...

Transient electronics have emerged as a new category of devices that can degrade after their functional lifetime, offering tremendous potential as disposable sensors, actuators, wearables, and implants. Additive manufacturing methods represent a promising ...

Hollow-core 3D printing (HC3DP) proposes a new method for the production of lightweight, material-efficient thermoplastic 3D printed elements. This new fabrication approach promises material savings of 50-80%, while increasing the extrusion rate significan ...

As the world moves further and further into the semiconductor era, the amount of waste generated from electronics ("e-waste") is increasing rapidly and unsustainably. Of particular note, alternatives to lead-based piezoelectric materials must be establishe ...

The one-step fabrication of gold films by inkjet printing of a gold precursor ink and its photochemical reduction by exposure to UV light is presented. Inkjet printing creates on a substrate with high control micrometer-thin reaction volumes in which upon ...

Precise packaging of nanoliter amounts of liquid in a microsystem is important for many biomedical applications. However, existing liquid encapsulation technologies have limitations in terms of liquid waste, evaporation, trapped bubbles, and liquid degrada ...

The goal of 3D printing is to realize complex 3D structures by locally adding material in small volume elements called voxels - in contrast to successively subtracting material by etching, milling or machining. This field started with optics-based proposal ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) enable the realization of energy-efficient and compact actuator systems. DEAs operate at the kilovolt range with typically microampere-level currents and hence minimize thermal losses in comparison to low voltage/high ...

Stimulated by the COVID-19 outbreak, the global healthcare industry better acknowledges the necessity of innovating novel methods for remote healthcare monitoring and treating patients outside clinics. Here we report the development of two different types ...

There has been a lot of interest in developing and producing biodegradable polymers to address the current environmental problem caused by the continued usage of synthetic polymers derived from petroleum products. Bioplastics have been identified as a poss ...

Recent developments in soft actuation demand for resilient, responsive materials with locally varying compositions that are sufficiently stiff to exhibit significant actuation forces. Hydrogels are inherently responsive to certain stimuli. Yet, they typica ...

Ceramics are highly technical materials with properties of interest for multiple industries. Precisely because of their high chemical, thermal, and mechanical resistance, ceramics are difficult to mold into complex shapes. A possibility to make convoluted ...

Inkjet printing technology was employed for the application of protective layer coatings in SOFC metallic interconnects. Aqueous-based spinel coatings were inkjet-printed on standard and surface nitrided K41 ferritic stainless-steel substrates. Inkjet-prin ...

3D printing is a powerful manufacturing technology for shaping materials into complex structures. While the palette of printable materials continues to expand, the rheological and chemical requisites for printing are not always easy to fulfill. Here, a uni ...

Additive manufacturing is a growing sector of industrial production that allows the fabrication of parts with complex geometries and reduced waste. The context of this thesis is light-based additive manufacturing technologies. In the first part of the the ...

As part of a project that aims to provide people with disabilities with simple assistive devices in Colombia, the possibility of creating a PET filament that can be printed by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) from beverage bottle waste was investigated, wi ...

Stretchable electrodes are more suitable for dielectric elastomer transducers (DET) the closer the mechanical characteristics of the electrodes and elastomer are. Here, a solvent-free synthesis and processing of conductive composites with excellent electri ...

Sensors capable of detecting and classifying volatile organic compounds (VOC) have been gaining more attention by the advent of internet-of-things (IoT) enabled devices and integration of various sensing elements into hand-held and portable devices. The re ...

Zipping electrostatic actuators operate by bending flexible electrodes using electrostatic forces. This principle allows the use of a wide range of dielectric and conductive materials. Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques can be used to fabricate these a ...

Functional printing is a versatile mass production method that has gained considerable scientific and industrial attention in the past few years. A wide range of electronics from passive circuit components (e.g., resistors and interconnects) to high-perfor ...
