Development of Ag-sheathed Bi(2223) tapes with oriented filaments

Résumé

Ag-sheathed (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 tapes have been developed with a special filament configuration that can be of great interest when a magnetic field is applied to the tape at a significant angle with respect to the a–b planes of the superconductor. The fabrication process we propose allows the preparation of long conductors in which the filaments can be inclined with respect to the plane of the tape, according to the magnetic flux profile. Such tapes can be useful in a variety of applications, as for the outer parts of high field superconducting magnets, where the flux lines present large angles with respect to the conductor plane.

Champ magnétique

En physique, dans le domaine de l'électromagnétisme, le champ magnétique est une grandeur ayant le caractère d'un champ vectoriel, c'est-à-dire caractérisée par la donnée d'une norme, d’une direction et d’un sens, définie en tout point de l'espace et permettant de modéliser et quantifier les effets magnétiques du courant électrique ou des matériaux magnétiques comme les aimants permanents.

Superconducting magnet

A superconducting magnet is an electromagnet made from coils of superconducting wire. They must be cooled to cryogenic temperatures during operation. In its superconducting state the wire has no electrical resistance and therefore can conduct much larger electric currents than ordinary wire, creating intense magnetic fields. Superconducting magnets can produce stronger magnetic fields than all but the strongest non-superconducting electromagnets, and large superconducting magnets can be cheaper to operate because no energy is dissipated as heat in the windings.

Technological applications of superconductivity
