Lead halide perovskites are promising semiconducting materials for solar energy harvesting. However, the presence of heavy-metal lead ions is problematic when considering potential harmful leakage into the environment from broken cells and also from a publ ...

The electrostrictive effect, which induces strain in ferroelectric ceramics, offers distinct advantages over its piezoelectric counterpart for high-precision actuator applications, including anhysteretic behavior even at high frequencies, rapid reaction ti ...

Strain is an inevitable phenomenon in two-dimensional (2D) material, regardless of whether the film is suspended or supported. Moreover, strain is known to alter the physical and chemical properties, such as the band gap, charge carrier effective masses, d ...

Water pollution by heavy metals is of increasing concern due to its devastating effects on the environment and on human health. For the removal of heavy metals from water sources, natural materials, such as spent-coffee-grains or orange/banana/chestnut pee ...

Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) solar cells have surpassed 25% power conversion efficiency, being ready for industrial-scale production of cheap photovoltaic (PV) panels. In this action, the major hurdle is its lead content, which in ...

During the past few years, organic lead halogen perovskites have emerged as a class of highly promising solar cell materials, with certified solar cell efficiencies now surpassing 20%. Concerns have, however, been raised about the possible environmental an ...

Flexoelectricity-the coupling between polarization and strain gradients-is a universal effect allowed by symmetry in all materials. Following its discovery several decades ago, studies of flexoelectricity in solids have been scarce due to the seemingly sma ...

Very recently, multiferroic behavior close to the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen was reported in oxohalide-based Cu2OCl2. In this study, we have established yet another novel mechanism for the origin of charge ordering in multiferroic Cu2OCl2. The ...

While commonly used piezoelectric materials contain lead, non-hazardous, high-performance piezoelectrics are yet to be discovered. Charged domain walls in ferroelectrics are considered inactive with regards to the piezoelectric response and, therefore, are ...

The mass-utilization of fossil resources has led to a dramatic increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) production, most of which is released directly into the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in global warming. Efforts to contain CO2 emissions and to capture, store ...

This research project experimentally and numerically investigates the growth and coalescence of pre-existing voids for a wide range of stress states in a ductile matrix with a special focus on shear dominated loading conditions and presents quantitative ki ...

The methane deliverable capacity of adsorbent materials is a critical performance metric that will determine the viability of using adsorbed natural gas (ANG) technology in vehicular applications. ARPA-E recently set a target deliverable capacity of 315 cc ...

Cu-Ni-Sn alloys with Pb additions exhibit high mechanical strength at room temperature coupled with good machinability but experience a significant ductility loss above the melting point of lead. We explore here the influence of minor additions of Al, Mn, ...

3,6-Anhydro-1-(aryl or alkylamino)-1-deoxy-D-sorbitol derivatives have been prepared in four steps from isosorbide, a by-product from the starch industry. The inhibitory activities of these new compounds have been evaluated towards 13 glycosidases. A first ...

We report on the solution of a real-time scheduling problem that arises in the design of software-based operation control of aircraft. A set of tasks has to be distributed on a minimum number of machines and offsets of the tasks have to be computed. The ta ...

Research on lead-free piezoceramics has dramatically increased over the last years due to stringent legislation demanding to phase out current lead- containing piezoceramics. The use of electrostrictive materials for electric-field induced strain has been ...

The present work shows that the electrochemical properties of electrospray ionization (ESI) can be used to add functions to the process. As example, we show how the choice of the electrode material can be used to study interactions between metal ions and b ...

The high Curie temperature (T-C similar to 825 degrees C) of BiFeO3 has made this material potentially attractive for the development of high-T-C piezoelectric ceramics. Despite significant advances in the search of new BiFeO3-based compositions, the piezo ...

Shooting ranges represent about 10% of polluted sites in Switzerland. This pollution, mainly consisting of lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb), can spread into the local groundwater, wildlife and plants. In this study, shooting range stop butt soils (elevated soil ...

There is increasing concern about environmental pollution by diffuse emissions of various environmental hazards emitted by transportation activities. For the first time substances released by railways to the environment were investigated. We considered the ...
