Carbides constitute a class of materials used for many applications, where excellent mechanical properties, such as stiffness, hardness and fracture toughness, are required. The machining industry is a typical example where carbide are crucial materials. W ...

Chip-based optical waveguides formed by a silicon nitride (Si3N4) core and a silicon dioxide (SiO2) cladding are an important platform for low loss waveguides and nonlinear optics. High Q microresonators based on this material system have become a standard ...

The mechanical behaviour of metallic materials that have a microstructure composed of a brittle phase embedded in a ductile matrix is dictated by a complex interplay of factors such as local phase properties, cohesive properties, geometrical characteristic ...

It was recently shown that silicon particles in heat-treated Al–Si casting alloys can contain flaws such as surface pinholes and grooves, which cause varying degrees of reduction in the in situ particle fracture strength and hence influence the mechanical ...

In the quest for high real in-line transmittances for transparent polycrystalline alumina (PCA), we need defect free processing. One of the biggest advances in producing high density defect free ceramics over recent years has been the advent of spark plasm ...

A theory to predict the initial flow stress of an arbitrary N-component fcc random alloy is extended to predict the additional strengthening when a dilute concentration of a substitutional element is introduced. Assuming properties for the N-component allo ...

Existing sliding tribocorrosion models have been developed for homogeneous passive metals such as stainless steel and pure metals. Many technical alloys contains however second phases, usually much harder than the metallic matrix, intended to provide bette ...

A microscopic three-point bending test that measures the strength of faceted particles of high aspect ratio is developed and used to probe individual coarsened plate-like silicon particles extracted from the eutectic Al-12.6%Si alloy. Focused ion beam mill ...

An oxide dispersion strengthened ODS ferritic steel has been produced by mechanical alloying of Fe–14Cr–2W–0.2Ti (wt.%) prealloyed powder with 0.55 (wt.%) Fe2Y intermetallic particles and consolidated by hot isostatic pressing. The microstructure after the ...

The aim of the work was to produce laminated structures consisting of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and AA2519 plates and to investigate their microstructure and mechanical properties with anemphasis on the role of an additional AA1050 interlayer. Explosive welding was ...

Silicon and Silicon carbide particles have been investigated by the mean of infrared (IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to establish their surface states. The results of this research are based on the estimation of the area under ...

The effects of thermal treatments on a Co-Ni-Cr super-alloy in the temperature range from 250 degrees C to 900 degrees C, resulting in secondary hardening, have been studied by Mechanical Spectroscopy. The simultaneous evolution of the internal friction sp ...
