Structural health monitoring (SHM) can be employed to reduce uncertainties in different aspects of structural analysis such as: load modeling, crack development, corrosion rates, etc. Fatigue is one of the main degradation processes of structures that caus ...

In Switzerland, the Opalinus Clay formation is considered the most likely host rock for a deep geological repository for nuclear waste. In deep geological repositories, H2 is expected to be the most abundant gas formed from the degradation of waste and fro ...

Corrosion of carbon-based electrodes and bipolar plates is a major hurdle and can be a cause of failure in commercial vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). Carbon corrosion was found to occur in a commercial VRFB (10 kW/40 kWh), whereby cracks through bip ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are approaching commercialization to improve power production efficiency. Currently, cost and lifetime reliability limit their spread in the market. The SOFC is ceramic-based, but refractory metal alloys are in fact the major ...

Gold and copper are the only two elemental metals that show a characteristic colour, due to the presence of a drop in the reflectivity curve inside the visible range. Reflectivities of all other metals are in general high and flat for all visible frequenci ...

Plastic effects during sheet metal forming can lead to undesirable distortions in formed components. Here, the three-stage work hardening and plastic strain recovery ("springback") in a cold-rolled, alpha-phase commercially pure titanium is examined. Inter ...

Thermal energy storage using the effects of the latent heat in the solid-liquid phase transformation has found its way into every day applications. Reusable, organic phase change media stabilize low temperatures of parcels, and salt/water tanks act as buff ...

Since the early of the 19th century, canning is one the most efficient ways to preserve foods. Tinplated steel has been used since the beginning for this purpose and it is still one of the most used materials for cans production because it combines the goo ...

Total hip joint arthroplasty is a medical procedure to replace a natural failed joint by an artificial joint to improve the quality of life of the patient. In spite of its broad success, there is a concern about the relation between the presence of modular ...

Due to its high sensitivity to corrosion, the use of Si in direct photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting systems that convert solar energy into chemical fuels has been greatly limited. Therefore, the development of low-cost materials resistant to corro ...

Steel reinforcing bars in concrete are protected from corrosion by a thin oxide film that is created on the steel surface in the highly alkaline environment of the concrete. Corrosion process begins once this oxide film is destroyed, for example, by chlori ...

An increasing number of onshore wind turbines in Europe will reach the end of their relatively short service duration, currently limited to 20 years by the design codes and many owners already wish to extend the service duration of their turbines. Recently ...
