Research in speech processing has largely focused on source-system modeling, where vocal fold vibrations serve as the source and the vocal cavity's articulations as the system. Nonetheless, speech production includes a complex combination of physiological ...

Aims Tobacco, in addition to being one of the greatest public health threats facing our world, is believed to have deleterious effects on bone metabolism and especially on bone healing. It has been described in the literature that patients who smoke are ap ...

Due to the increasing demands of today's fast-paced world, mental health concerns are on the rise, which necessitates innovative approaches to provide support to those in need. Open-domain conversational agents known as chatbots, offer a unique opportunit ...

IMPORTANCE Aging is associated with a decline in mitochondrial function and reduced exercise capacity. Urolithin A is a natural gut microbiome-derived food metabolite that has been shown to stimulate mitophagy and improve muscle function in older animals a ...

Background Mechanical hyperalgesia and allodynia incidence varies considerably amongst neuropathic pain patients. This study explored whether sensory or psychological factors associate with mechanical hyperalgesia and brush allodynia in a human experimenta ...

Background: Testing the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) at low-altitude helps to detect those who do not hyperventilate appropriately in hypoxia but might not necessarily predict the HVR and the risk to develop acute mountain sickness (AMS) at high alti ...

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of altitude and distance on uphill vertical speed (VS) and the main spatio-temporal gait parameters during an extreme mountain ultra-marathon. The VS, stride height (SH) and stride frequency (SF) ...

The shoulder is the joint with the largest range of motion in the human body. It is composed of three articulations, the glenohumeral articulation providing about two thirds of its mobility which is, also the most complex and fragile of the three. For this ...

Burtscher, Martin, Michael Philadelphy, Hannes Gatterer, Johannes Burtscher, Martin Faulhaber, Werner Nachbauer, and Rudolf Likar. Physiological responses in humans acutely exposed to high altitude (3480 m): Minute ventilation and oxygenation are predictiv ...

Background: The associations among cortisol levels, body water status, and acute mountain sickness (AMS) remain unclear. We investigated associations between AMS prevalence and severity with resting saliva cortisol levels at low altitude (LA) and high alti ...

A recently proposed navigation methodology for aerial platforms based on the vehicle dynamic model (VDM) has shown promising results in terms of navigation autonomy. Its practical realization requires that control inputs are related to the same absolute ti ...

Annually, thousands of air travellers visit high altitude destinations to enjoy hiking tours to attractions in surrounding areas. However, many of them are not adequately trained, not sufficiently acclimatized and/or may suffer from pre-existing diseases. ...

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are the two most common motoneuron disorders, which share typical pathological hallmarks while remaining genetically distinct. Indeed, SMA is caused by deletions or mutations in the surv ...

The mountain cryosphere of mainland Europe is recognized to have important impacts on a range of environmental processes. In this paper, we provide an overview on the current knowledge on snow, glacier, and permafrost processes, as well as their past, curr ...

Autonomous control of ultra-light indoor microflyers is a difficult and largely unsolved task because of the strong limitations on the kind of sensors that can be embedded. We propose a new approach for altitude control of a 10-gram microflyer, where altit ...

Heart rate variability (HRV) is commonly used to diagnose overreaching and monitor athletes’ responses to training. Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is modified by changes in training load and might be another means to detect overreaching. The goal of this stu ...

The fundamental revelations to the founders of the three monotheistic religions, among many other revelation experiences, had occurred on a mountain. These three revelation experiences share many phenomenological components like feeling and hearing a prese ...

The present study aimed to compare sleep disordered breathing during live high-train low (LHTL) altitude camp using normobaric hypoxia (NH) and hypobaric hypoxia (HH). Sixteen highly trained triathletes completed two 18-day LHTL camps in a crossover design ...

Well-dated records of tropical glacier fluctuations are essential for developing hypotheses and testing proposed mechanisms for past climate changes. Since organic material for radiocarbon dating is typically scarce in low-latitude, high-altitude environme ...

Living at high altitude is one of the most difficult challenges that humans had to cope with during their evolution. Whereas several genomic studies have revealed some of the genetic bases of adaptations in Tibetan, Andean, and Ethiopian populations, relat ...
