A metaprogrammer should be able to reason about the semantics of the generated code. Multi-stage programming introduced an elegant and powerful solution to this problem. It follows a semantically driven approach to code generation, where semantics are full ...

Dataflow programming is a methodology that enables the development of high-level, parametric programs that are independent of the underlying platform. This approach is particularly useful for heterogeneous platforms, as it eliminates the need to rewrite ap ...

Today, automatic control is integrated into a wide spectrum of real-world systems such as electrical grids and transportation networks. Many of these systems comprise numerous interconnected agents, perform safety-critical operations, or generate large amo ...

The performance of programs executed on heterogeneous parallel platforms largely depends on the design choices regarding how to partition the processing on the various different processing units. In other words, it depends on the assumptions and parameters ...

The growing popularity of edge computing has fostered the development of diverse solutions to support Artificial Intelligence (AI) in energy-constrained devices. Nonetheless, comparatively few efforts have focused on the resiliency exhibited by AI workload ...

When the time comes to make a critical decision, it is of paramount importance to prepare enough so that all the information necessary is available at decision time. Under-preparation leads to uninformed decisions; over-preparation, however, may lead to co ...

Increasing internet connectivity poses an existential threat for cyber-physical systems. Securing these safety-critical systems becomes an important challenge. Cyber-physical systems often comprise several control applications that are implemented on share ...

Program generation is indispensable. We propose a novel unification of two existing metaprogramming techniques: multi-stage programming and hygienic generative macros. The former supports runtime code generation and execution in a type-safe manner while th ...

Advances in experimental techniques and computational power allowing researchers to gather anatomical and electrophysiological data at unprecedented levels of detail have fostered the development of increasingly complex models in computational neuroscience ...

Programming languages are increasingly compiled to multiple runtimes, each featuring their own rich structures such as their object model. Furthermore, they need to interact with other languages targeting said runtimes. A language targeting only one runtim ...

Just-in-time (JIT) compilation of running programs provides more optimization opportunities than offline compilation. Modern JIT compilers, such as those in virtual machines like Oracle's HotSpot for Java or Google's V8 for JavaScript, rely on dynamic prof ...

The trade-offs between the use of modern high-level and low-level programming languages in constructing complex software artifacts are well known. High-level languages allow for greater programmer productivity: abstraction and genericity allow for the same ...

A new digital feedback control system (named the SCD "Systeme de Controle Distribue") has been developed, integrated and used successfully to control TCV (Tokamak a Configuration Variable) plasmas. The system is designed to be modular, distributed, and sca ...

This paper presents the integration of an acquisition and computing unit capable of acquiring and processing fast magnetic signals in real time in the control system of the tokamak a configuration variabile tokamak. All aspects of system integration and te ...

High level data structures are a cornerstone of modern programming and at the same time stand in the way of compiler optimizations. In order to reason about user or library-defined data structures, compilers need to be extensible. Common mechanisms to exte ...

To increase their dependability, distributed control systems (DCSs) need to agree in real time about crashed hosts, i.e., they need a real-time membership service. In this paper, we prove that such a service cannot be implemented deterministically if, besi ...

Good software engineering practice demands generalization and abstraction, whereas high performance demands specialization and concretization. These goals are at odds, and compilers can only rarely translate expressive high-level programs to modern hardwar ...

The celebrated distributed computing approach for building systems and services using multiple machines continues to expand to new domains. Computation devices nowadays have additional sensing and communication capabilities, while becoming, at the same tim ...

The holy grail for a domain-specific language (DSL) is to be friendly and fast. A DSL should be friendly in the sense that it is easy to use by DSL end-users, and easy to develop by DSL authors. DSLs can be developed as entirely new compilers and ecosystem ...

Programs expressed in a high-level programming language need to be translated to a low-level machine dialect for execution. This translation is usually accomplished by a compiler, which is able to translate any legal program to equivalent low-level code. B ...
