Sodium-zinc chloride (Na-ZnCl2) batteries offer a sustainable alternative to sodium-nickel chloride (Na-NiCl2) batteries but face challenges with low specific energy and cycle life. This study evaluates two electrode designs: conventional particle-based Zn ...

In supervised learning, the regularization path is sometimes used as a convenient theoretical proxy for the optimization path of gradient descent initialized from zero. In this paper, we study a modification of the regularization path for infinite-width 2- ...

We consider the problem of minimizing emission of a heavy-duty truck transporting freight between two locations subject to a hard deadline constraint. The truck is equipped with a multi-speed transmission and a modern combustion engine that intelligently s ...

In the last decade, the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) in distribution networks has been constantly increasing due to their many technical, economical, and environmental benefits. However, the large-scale penetration of RESs is limited by t ...

Electricity storage technologies in buildings are evolving, mainly to reduce their environmental impact and to improve self-sufficiency of buildings that produce their own energy through Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) installations. To maximize s ...

A high share of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation in low-voltage networks may lead to over-voltage, and line/transformer overloading. To mitigate these issues, we investigate how advanced electricity tariffs could ensure safe grid operation while en ...

The support of distributed energy resources (DERs) for providing operational flexibility can be beneficial from the transmission system operators' (TSOs') viewpoint. Despite all opportunities, using DERs within an active distribution network (ADN) for prov ...

Controlling the consumption profile of office buildings can be used to provide balancing services to the power grid at a financial benefit without violating its thermal comfort constraints. The economic advantage of such a service is a reduction in the tot ...

Objective. In many applications, multielectrode arrays employed as neural implants require a high density and a high number of electrodes to precisely record and stimulate the activity of the nervous system while preserving the overall size of the array as ...

We consider a class of large scale robust optimization problems. While the robust optimization literature often relies on structural assumptions to reformulate the problem in a tractable form using duality, this method is not always applicable and can resu ...

Due to the increasing presence of renewable inertia-less energy sources, power electronics interfaces are required to exploit their flexibility in order to support the overall grid quality of service. One way to achieve this, is that power converters are c ...

In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for the design of a family of controllers to be used within an adaptive switching control scheme. The resulting switching controller is able to attenuate the effects of disturbances having uncertain and possibly t ...

In practice, the quest for the optimal operation of energy systems is complicated by the simultaneous presence of operating constraints, among which the need for producing the power required by the user, and of uncertainty. The latter concept incorporates ...

Reservoir sedimentation and the resulting storage losses impact reliability, efficiency, safety and thus the sustainability of the hydropower schemes. Beside traditional storage hydropower plants, also pumped-storage facilities are affected. Flexible turbi ...

We introduce a new wavelet-based method for the implementation of Total-Variation-type denoising. The data term is least-squares, while the regularization term is gradient-based. The particularity of our method is to exploit a link between the discrete gra ...

This paper details the development of a systematic methodology using thermo-economic modeling that can be used to identify the optimal exploitation schemes of geothermal resources. A multi-period approach is used, integrating the superstructure of exploita ...

Transportation networks are inevitably selected with reference to their global cost which depends on the strengths and the distribution of the embedded currents. We prove that optimal current distributions for a uniformly injected d-dimensional network exh ...

Multi Agent Systems (MAS) have recently attracted a lot of interest because of their ability to model many real life scenarios where information and control are distributed among a set of different agents. Practical applications include planning, schedulin ...

In addition to the high-capacity storage facilities based on hydropower technologies, electrochemical solutions are today’s candidate for storage for renewable energy sources support. However, sustainability and limited life cycles of batteries are often i ...
